Udaipur City station sits close enough to the lakes that most visitors are looking at Lake Pichola within twenty minutes of stepping off the platform.

How far the main attractions are from the station

AttractionDistanceTypical time
Lake Pichola and City PalaceAbout 3-4 km10-15 min by auto
Jagdish TempleAbout 3.5 km12-15 min
Bagore ki HaveliAbout 4 km15 min
Saheliyon ki BariAbout 4.5 km15-18 min
Fateh Sagar LakeAbout 5.5 km18-20 min
Shilpgram (crafts village)About 8 km25 min
Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace)About 8-9 km, uphill25-30 min

Everything except Sajjangarh and Shilpgram clusters fairly close together around the old city and the lake, so a lot of the day can be walked once you're there, with autos filling the longer gaps.

Best time of year to visit Udaipur

October to March is the comfortable stretch, with mild days and cool evenings that suit both the lakeside walks and an evening boat ride. April to June gets hot enough that midday outdoor sightseeing is uncomfortable, though the palaces and havelis offer shaded relief. The monsoon (July to September) fills the lakes and makes the city genuinely photogenic, with Sajjangarh's viewpoint especially good after rain, but a very dry monsoon can leave Lake Pichola lower than the postcard shots suggest, so it varies year to year.

Tip: book the Lake Pichola boat ride for the hour before sunset. The light on the City Palace and Jag Mandir from the water is the single most photographed view in Udaipur for good reason.

Can Udaipur's highlights be covered in a single day

The lakeside core, yes. Sajjangarh and Shilpgram are more comfortably a second day, since Sajjangarh's real payoff is the sunset view from the hilltop, which does not combine well with an already packed lakeside itinerary.

Half-day plan: City Palace complex in the morning before the heat and crowds build, then Jagdish Temple, a walk through the old city lanes, and Bagore ki Haveli for its evening puppet and dance show.

Full-day plan: Add Saheliyon ki Bari and Fateh Sagar Lake in the late morning, lunch near the lake, an afternoon boat ride on Pichola, and close with sunset either from the water or, if you have transport sorted, up at Sajjangarh.

Is prepaid auto or taxi available right outside Udaipur station

Yes, autos and taxis operate right outside Udaipur City station, and most hotels in the old city or near the lake are a short, inexpensive ride away. A day-rate taxi or auto is worth arranging if your plan includes Sajjangarh, since it sits uphill and away from the walkable core, and return transport can be harder to find on the spot after dark.

Confirm the return trip for Sajjangarh in advance. The road up is quiet after sunset, and autos are less frequent once the light fades, so either keep your driver waiting or arrange a fixed pickup time.

Which trains connect most easily to Udaipur

Delhi (Hazrat Nizamuddin)Mewar Express (12963)Overnight, arrives in the morning
Delhi (Sarai Rohilla)Chetak Express (20473)Daily superfast
Ahmedabad (Asarva)Asarva-Udaipur Vande Bharat (26964)Fastest option to Gujarat, about 4 h 15 min

Udaipur also has trains toward Jaipur and connections onward to Jodhpur for travellers covering more of Rajasthan on the same trip. Check current timings and seat availability on each train's page before booking, since some of these run only on specific days.

Food and where to stay

Rooftop restaurants overlooking Lake Pichola are Udaipur's signature dining experience, and the old city near Jagdish Temple has the highest concentration of them, along with budget and mid-range guesthouses within walking distance of the ghats. Dal baati churma and gatte ki sabzi are the Rajasthani staples worth seeking out, and a few lakeside cafes have become known for a long, unhurried breakfast with a view rather than a specific dish.

Staying inside the old city, close to Gangaur Ghat or Jagdish Chowk, means most of the half-day plan is within walking distance, which cuts down on autos considerably. If you would rather stay nearer the station for an early train the next morning, that area has simpler, more functional options, a short ride from the lake rather than beside it.

A note on Jag Mandir and the lake islands

Jag Mandir, the island palace in the middle of Lake Pichola, is reached only by boat from the City Palace jetty, and a visit is usually bundled with the sunset boat ride rather than booked as a separate trip. Udaipur's other island palace, the Lake Palace, is now a hotel and only accessible to guests staying there, though it is very much part of the view from the ghats regardless.

Boat timings and entry fees change with the season, and the last ride is usually well before nightfall; check the current schedule at the City Palace ticket counter on the day rather than assuming last year's timing still applies.
