Agra is one of the most-visited same-day trips from Delhi, and the train is by far the most comfortable way to do it, cutting out the unpredictable Yamuna Expressway traffic and getting you to the Taj Mahal with most of the day still ahead.
Getting there with the most daylight
The Gatimaan Express (12050) leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin (NZM) at around 8:10 am and reaches Agra Cantt (AGC) by about 9:50 am, a run of roughly 100 minutes, among the fastest scheduled trains in the country when it launched. That gets you into Agra before mid-morning with the entire day free for sightseeing.
| Train | NZM departure | AGC arrival |
|---|---|---|
| Gatimaan Express (12050) | About 8:10 am | About 9:50 am |
| Taj Express (12280) | About 7:10 am | About 9:25 am |
How much time do you actually get at the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort?
With a 9:50 am arrival, you can realistically be at the Taj Mahal by around 10:30-11:00 am after the taxi ride and airport-style security check at the entrance, which takes some time given the volume of visitors. Plan for two to two and a half hours at the Taj itself if you want to take it in properly rather than rush it, including time in the gardens and the main mausoleum. Agra Fort, a 20-30 minute drive away, needs another one and a half to two hours, and is worth seeing for its own sake rather than just as a photo backdrop for the Taj Mahal views it offers from certain points.
| Stop | Time needed |
|---|---|
| Taj Mahal | 2-2.5 hours, including entry and security |
| Agra Fort | 1.5-2 hours |
| Mehtab Bagh (across the river, Taj view) | 30-45 min |
| Lunch | 45 min-1 hour |
Is a same-day round trip actually comfortable?
Yes, for most travellers, as long as you don't try to squeeze in too many extra stops. The core plan, Taj Mahal in the late morning, lunch, Agra Fort in the afternoon and maybe a quick stop at Mehtab Bagh for a different angle on the Taj across the river, fits comfortably into the window between the morning and evening Gatimaan trains without feeling rushed. Trying to add Fatehpur Sikri, about 40 km further out, on the same day makes for a much tighter, more tiring trip; it's better saved for a trip with an overnight stay.
The best evening train back
The Gatimaan Express's return working (12049) leaves Agra Cantt at around 5:35 pm and reaches Hazrat Nizamuddin by about 7:30 pm, a comfortable finish to the day that gives you until late afternoon in Agra before you need to head back to the station.
Which Delhi station to leave from
The Gatimaan Express departs from Hazrat Nizamuddin, not New Delhi station, which trips up some first-time visitors who default to the more famous terminus. Nizamuddin is a separate station in south Delhi, so check which one your specific train uses when booking and plan your route to the station accordingly, especially if you're coming from an airport hotel or a part of the city closer to New Delhi station.
Alternatives if the Gatimaan is sold out
The Taj Express (12280), leaving New Delhi around 7:00 am and reaching Agra Cantt by about 9:25 am, is a solid backup with a similarly early arrival, though it's a Superfast rather than a semi-high-speed service and takes a bit longer overall. Several other day trains also connect Delhi and Agra through the day if your dates or preferred departure station don't line up with the Gatimaan.
Getting around Agra for the day
A pre-arranged full-day taxi from Agra Cantt is the simplest way to cover the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Mehtab Bagh without wasting time finding transport between each stop. Autos and cycle-rickshaws also work for shorter hops, particularly near the Taj Mahal's east and west gates, where private vehicles aren't allowed right up to the entrance and a short shared electric vehicle or walk covers the last stretch.
A note on security and timing
The Taj Mahal's entry security is thorough, no food, tripods beyond a certain size, or several other items are allowed inside, and queues build up through the late morning. Arriving as close to opening time as your train schedule allows generally means shorter lines and cooler, better light for photos than a midday visit.
Food and practical notes
Petha, a translucent sweet made from ash gourd, is Agra's best-known local specialty and widely available near both the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort areas, worth picking up on your way back to the station. Carry water and sun protection regardless of season, since both the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort involve a fair amount of walking in the open, with limited shade across much of both complexes.
