Golden Triangle by Train: A 5-Day Itinerary

A day-by-day Delhi-Agra-Jaipur itinerary built around real train timings, including the afternoon train that covers the Agra-Jaipur leg.

Delhi, Agra and Jaipur form India's most travelled circuit, and a train-based version of it works well for all three legs, as long as you use Agra Fort station for the middle one. Road is a reasonable alternative for Agra to Jaipur if you want door-to-door flexibility.

The ideal train sequence for Delhi, Agra and Jaipur

Delhi to Agra by train, Agra to Jaipur by train or road, and Jaipur back to Delhi by train is the sequence that matches what's available. Several daytime trains run from Agra Fort (AF) to Jaipur, including the AF AII SF Express (22988), which leaves Agra Fort at 14:35 and reaches Jaipur at 18:45. Many tour itineraries still cover the middle leg by car, typically around five hours for the roughly 240 km, which suits you if you want to stop at Fatehpur Sikri on the way.

Day 1: Delhi

Spend the day on Delhi's two halves: Old Delhi's Red Fort, Jama Masjid and the lanes of Chandni Chowk in the morning, then Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar or India Gate in the afternoon, depending on pace. The Red Fort is closed on Mondays, so avoid starting on a Monday. Stay the night in Delhi and get an early start the next morning.

Day 2: Delhi to Agra, the Taj and the Fort

Take the Gatimaan Express (12050) from Hazrat Nizamuddin, departing 08:10 and arriving Agra Cantt by 09:50, the fastest option on this leg. It runs six days a week, not on Fridays. Spend the day on the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, and stay overnight in Agra so the next morning is free for a couple of smaller sights before moving on.

Tip: the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. Check this against your Day 2 date before booking, and shift the whole itinerary by a day if it falls on one.

Day 3: Agra to Jaipur

Use the morning for Mehtab Bagh or Itimad-ud-Daulah, whichever you skipped the day before, then take the AF AII SF Express (22988) from Agra Fort at 14:35, reaching Jaipur at 18:45. If you'd rather go by road, a private car or tourist taxi covers the roughly five-hour drive. Either way you arrive in Jaipur by early evening with time to settle in before dinner.

Agra Fort, not Agra Cantt. The daytime trains to Jaipur leave from Agra Fort station, near the fort itself, not from Agra Cantt where the Delhi trains arrive. Check the departure station on your ticket before you set off.

Day 4: Jaipur

A full day: Amber Fort in the morning before the heat and crowds build, then City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal in the old city through the afternoon. For a fuller breakdown of distances and a half versus full day plan, see our Jaipur station guide.

Day 5: Jaipur back to Delhi

Take the Ajmer Shatabdi (12016) from Jaipur, departing 17:35 and reaching New Delhi by 22:30, which works as a same-day return, closing the loop back where you started. The Swarna Jayanti Rajdhani (12957) is an overnight alternative, leaving Jaipur at about 02:50 and reaching New Delhi at 07:30.

Can this itinerary be shortened to 4 days

Yes, by treating Agra as a day trip instead of an overnight stop. Take an early Gatimaan or Shatabdi from Delhi, cover the Taj and the Fort in a single long day, then continue straight to Jaipur by road that same evening rather than staying the night in Agra. It's a longer, more tiring Day 2, but it saves a full day overall, useful if your schedule is genuinely tight rather than by choice. For a deeper look at what's realistic in a single day at each stop, see our Agra station guide.

Check current timings and seat availability for every leg on the trip planner before you lock in dates, since a golden triangle trip has several connections that all need to line up.

Booking tips for this specific route

  • Book the Gatimaan or Shatabdi early. Both are popular once-a-day services (the Gatimaan does not run on Fridays) on a heavily travelled route, and seats go quickly in the October to March peak season.
  • Arrange the Agra-Jaipur car in advance rather than hunting for one on arrival, especially if you want a specific departure time to maximise your Agra morning.
  • Keep Fridays off your Agra day, since the Taj Mahal is closed, and build that into which day you book the Delhi-Agra train for.
  • Leave buffer time before a flight out of Delhi on Day 5, since both the Shatabdi and the road legs earlier in the trip can run late enough to matter for a tight connection.

Frequently asked questions

What's the ideal train sequence for Delhi, Agra and Jaipur?

Delhi to Agra by train, Agra to Jaipur by the afternoon train from Agra Fort (or by road), and Jaipur back to Delhi by train. The AF AII SF Express (22988) covers Agra Fort to Jaipur in about four hours.

How many nights should I spend in each city?

One night in Delhi, one in Agra, and one to two in Jaipur works well for a five-day trip, with an extra Jaipur night if you want a slower pace around Amber Fort and the old city.

Which trains give the most time at each stop?

The Gatimaan Express is the fastest Delhi-Agra option, under two hours, leaving the most time in Agra. For the return, the evening Ajmer Shatabdi from Jaipur maximises the day there before heading back.

Can this itinerary be shortened to 4 days?

Yes, by treating Agra as a day trip rather than an overnight stop: an early train from Delhi, the Taj and Fort in one long day, then continuing to Jaipur by road that same evening.
