Varanasi Junction sits close enough to the old city that the ghats along the Ganga are a short ride away, though the last stretch into the lanes themselves has to be done on foot.

How far the main attractions are from the station

AttractionDistanceTypical time
Dashashwamedh GhatAbout 5-6 km15-20 min by auto, plus a walk
Kashi Vishwanath TempleAbout 5-6 km15-20 min, adjacent to the ghats
Manikarnika GhatAbout 5 km15-18 min
Assi GhatAbout 7-8 km20-25 min
SarnathAbout 10-12 km25-30 min
Ramnagar FortAbout 14 km (across the river)35-40 min

The ghats and Kashi Vishwanath Temple sit within walking distance of each other once you're in the old city, but the lanes are narrow and vehicle-free in stretches, so the last 10-15 minutes of any of these trips is usually on foot.

Best time of year to visit Varanasi

October to March brings the most comfortable temperatures for the ghats and the long evening aarti, though winter mornings can be genuinely foggy, which sometimes delays trains and river boat rides alike. April to June turns very hot, and the exposed ghats offer little shade through the day. The monsoon (July to September) raises the river level noticeably, sometimes submerging the lower steps of several ghats, which changes how much of them is usable for that stretch.

Tip: the Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat happens every evening at sunset, rain or shine, and is worth building the rest of your day around rather than treating as an optional extra. Arrive at least 30-45 minutes early for a decent view, since the ghat fills up fast.

Can Varanasi's highlights be covered in a single day

The ghats and Kashi Vishwanath Temple, yes. Sarnath is better as a separate half-day, since it sits in a different direction from the ghats and has its own pace, built around the Buddhist archaeological site and museum rather than a quick stop.

Half-day plan: a dawn boat ride along the ghats, when the light and the river activity are at their most striking, followed by a walk through the old city lanes to Kashi Vishwanath Temple.

Full-day plan: add Sarnath in the late morning or early afternoon, then return for the Dashashwamedh Ghat aarti at sunset, which works well as the natural close to the day regardless of what else is on the itinerary.

Is prepaid auto or taxi available right outside Varanasi station

Yes, autos and taxis operate right outside Varanasi Junction, and most hotels near the ghats will also arrange a pickup if you let them know your train timing in advance. Since the old city's lanes near the ghats are not vehicle-friendly, expect to finish the last stretch of any ghat-bound trip on foot regardless of how you start the journey.

Unofficial boat and "priest" offers near the ghats can be pushier here than in most Indian tourist areas. Agreeing a boat fare upfront, or booking through your hotel, avoids most of the on-the-spot pressure to pay more once you're already on the water.

Which trains connect most easily to Varanasi

FromTrainNotes
DelhiVande Bharat (22436)India's original Vande Bharat route, about 8 h
DelhiVande Bharat (22416)Afternoon departure, second service
DelhiPoorva Express (12382)Overnight, all classes including sleeper

Varanasi is also well connected to Kolkata, Patna and Lucknow for travellers combining it with a wider north or east India route. Check current timings and seat availability on each train's page, since Vande Bharat classes are chair car only and don't suit an overnight preference.

Once you arrive, our Varanasi Junction board shows live arrivals and platforms, and the trip planner is useful for onward connections to Ayodhya or Prayagraj if you're covering more of the region.

Food and where to stay

Staying near Assi Ghat or Dashashwamedh Ghat puts you within walking distance of the dawn boat ride and the evening aarti both, which matters more here than in most cities since so much of Varanasi's rhythm is tied to the river's edge. Kachori sabzi for breakfast, and the city's famous malaiyyo, a saffron-and-cardamom milk foam sold only in winter mornings, are worth timing your visit around if it happens to be the season. Thandai and the city's distinct paan are two more things travellers specifically seek out here, both sold from small stalls throughout the old city rather than at any single famous shop.

If you're staying closer to the station for an early departure, that area has more straightforward, functional hotels, a short auto ride from the ghats rather than beside them.

A note on the morning boat ride

The dawn boat ride is usually booked directly at the ghat the same morning or the evening before through your hotel, rather than online in advance, and prices vary with the season and how much bargaining you're willing to do. Sunrise itself, rather than mid-morning, is when the ghats are at their most photogenic and least crowded, so an early start pays off more here than at most tourist sites, and it also avoids the stronger midday heat for much of the year.
