Tirupati town and the Tirumala hills above it are two different places, and mixing them up is the most common planning mistake. The Tirupati railway station (TPTY) is in the town, at the foot of the hills. The Sri Venkateswara temple that most people travel for sits about 22 km up, on Tirumala. Everything below is what you can reasonably cover from the station itself, in the town or on a day trip.

Getting from the station to Tirumala

Outside TPTY there is a prepaid auto and taxi counter, and APSRTC buses run to Tirumala through the day from the main bus stand a short walk from the station. The uphill drive on the ghat road takes 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic, longer during festival rush. The bus is the cheapest option; a private taxi is faster if you are short on time or travelling with elders.

Tip: book your Rs 300 Special Entry Darshan slot online through the TTD website before you leave home. The free Slotted Sarva Darshan tokens are issued in person at TTD counters in Tirupati (such as Srinivasam, Vishnu Nivasam and the Bhudevi Complex) and run out early on busy days. Walking in with no slot on a weekend can mean an overnight wait.

Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple is the town's own big Vaishnavite temple and does not need the Tirumala queue system, so it is a good stop if you have only a few hours between trains. Kapila Theertham, a small waterfall with a Shiva shrine at its base, is busiest in the morning and after a spell of rain.

A half-day out: Chandragiri Fort

Chandragiri Fort, about 12 km from the station, was once the seat of the Vijayanagara kings and later the place where the East India Company signed the deal that founded Madras. The Raja Mahal inside now houses an archaeology museum, and there is a modest light and sound show in the evening. Autos and local buses both run there from town; a round trip with an hour at the fort takes about three hours.

A fuller day out: Talakona waterfall

Talakona, Andhra Pradesh's tallest waterfall inside the Sri Venkateswara National Park, is about 55 km from Tirupati and needs a hired car or taxi for the day since public transport is thin. It is worth it only if you have a spare day; the forest checkpost closes access after evening, so plan to start early and be back by dusk.

Beware of touts near the bus stand and station offering "fast track" Tirumala darshan for cash. The only legitimate special entry ticket is the TTD-priced Rs 300 counter or online slot; anything sold above that outside the official system is a scam.

Where to stay and eat

TTD runs a large network of guesthouses (Srinivasam, Vishnu Nivasam and others) both in the town and on Tirumala, booked through the same portal as the darshan slot, and they are the cheapest reliable option if you can get a room. Private hotels cluster around the station and the bus stand, and rates jump sharply during Brahmotsavam and other festival weeks, so book ahead if you are travelling in September or October. For food, the town is full of pure-vegetarian udupi-style places serving a full South Indian breakfast for a modest price, and the TTD-run Annaprasadam canteen near the temples serves a free meal to pilgrims.

Getting around the town

Autos are the easiest way to move between the station, the bus stand and the town temples, and most drivers know fixed unofficial rates for the short hops even without a meter. For Chandragiri or Talakona, it is worth agreeing a round-trip fare with waiting time before you start, since return transport can be hard to find once you are out of town. Ride apps also operate in Tirupati town, though coverage thins out on the way to Talakona.

When to go and how long to stay

September to February is the most comfortable stretch, before the hill road gets crowded for Brahmotsavam in the autumn and cools down for winter. Summer afternoons on the plains below the hills get very hot, which makes the early-morning Kapila Theertham visit more pleasant than a midday one.

A single overnight stop covers Tirumala darshan plus one town temple. Two nights lets you add Chandragiri or Talakona without rushing the main darshan. If you are coming a long way by train, building in a spare half day before your return journey is a sensible cushion, since darshan queues can run longer than the estimate on the website during weekends and festival periods.

Getting to Tirupati by train

TPTY is a major junction with direct trains from Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi. From Chennai, the MAS TPTY Express (16053) and the Sapthagiri Express (16057) both run same-day, and the Sapthagiri is fast enough for a day trip. Check live running status and platform for your train before you leave for the station, since Tirupati's platforms get busy during festival season.

    Frequently asked questions

How far are the main attractions from Tirupati railway station?

The town temples (Govindaraja Swamy, Kapila Theertham, ISKCON) are all within about 4 km of the station. Chandragiri Fort is about 12 km, and Talakona waterfall is a further trip at roughly 55 km.

What is the best time of year to visit Tirupati?

September to February is cooler and more comfortable for the hill climb and the queues. Summer afternoons on the plains can be very hot.

Can Tirupati's highlights be covered in a single day from the station?

A Tirumala darshan plus one town temple like Kapila Theertham is doable in a long day if you already have your darshan slot booked. Adding Chandragiri Fort or Talakona is better spread over two days.

Is prepaid auto or taxi available right outside Tirupati station?

Yes, there is a prepaid auto and taxi counter just outside TPTY, and APSRTC buses to Tirumala leave from the bus stand a short walk away.

Which trains connect most easily to Tirupati?
