Rail Madad is Indian Railways' own complaint and assistance app, and it does more than the 139 helpline can in a single phone call: it takes photos as evidence, gives you a written reference number, and lets you track progress instead of waiting on hold. This is a walkthrough of what it actually covers and how to use it well.

What Rail Madad is for

Rail Madad replaced a scattered set of older complaint channels with one app and website, backed by the same call centre that answers 139. It handles both onboard problems, a dirty coach, a broken AC, a missing linen set, and station-side ones, poor lighting, an overcharging vendor, a lift out of order, plus security concerns, medical needs, and general feedback or suggestions. The standalone Rail Madad app and website still work, and the same complaint service is also built into RailOne, the railways' combined app launched in 2025.

The main complaint categories

CategoryTypical use
CleanlinessDirty toilet, coach, or bedding, both on train and at stations
Coach maintenanceBroken AC, faulty lights, a berth that won't fold, leaking water
Catering and vendingOverpriced or stale food, a vendor without a visible price list
SecurityHarassment, theft, suspicious behaviour, routed to RPF
Medical assistanceA passenger needing help onboard or at a station
Staff behaviourRudeness or a bribe demand from railway staff
Punctuality and informationFeedback on delays or poor announcements, not a substitute for live status

How to file a complaint, step by step

  • Open the app and choose whether you're reporting an onboard issue or a station issue, since the follow-up questions differ.
  • Enter your PNR for an onboard complaint; the app pulls your train number, coach and journey date automatically, which speeds up dispatch to the right train.
  • Pick the category from the list, cleanliness, catering, security, and so on, then a more specific sub-category.
  • Add a photo if you can. A picture of the dirty toilet or the overcharging bill makes the complaint far more actionable for whoever picks it up.
  • Add a short description in your own words, coach and berth number if it's onboard, and submit.
  • Save the reference number shown on screen. This is what you use to track the complaint afterward.

Tip: for anything urgent, a security or medical emergency, still call 139 and press 1 directly rather than filing through the app. The app is best for issues that need a documented record but aren't an immediate emergency.

Tracking your complaint

Once filed, the app shows a status against your reference number, typically moving from registered to assigned to resolved. Onboard complaints about things like cleaning or a broken fixture are often actioned while the train is still running, since the complaint is routed to staff at the next major station. Station and off-train complaints can take longer, generally a few days, depending on what's involved.

Rail Madad vs calling 139

The two aren't really competitors, they're the same backend system with different front doors. Call 139 when you need someone to act immediately, a medical situation, harassment, anything that can't wait for a written complaint to be picked up. Use the Rail Madad app when you want a documented, photo-backed complaint with a trackable reference, or when the issue isn't urgent enough to justify a phone call, an overpriced snack, a cleanliness issue you want on record, a suggestion for improvement.

Beware of fake apps and numbers. Download Rail Madad only from the official Play Store or App Store listing, and never share your UPI PIN, OTP or card details with anyone claiming to process a Rail Madad refund over the phone. The real complaint process never asks for payment details.

Does it work for both onboard and station issues

Yes, and the app is built around that distinction from the first screen: pick "train" or "station" and the categories that follow adjust accordingly. A platform-side complaint, dirty waiting rooms, broken escalators, poor signage, goes through the same app and reference-number system as an onboard one.

What Rail Madad won't do

It's a complaint and assistance channel, not a booking or status tool. For where your train actually is right now, our live running status pages are faster and don't need a login. If a delay means you need alternatives, the trip planner shows other trains and connections on your route. For ticket-specific issues like refunds on a missed connection, IRCTC's own portal handles TDR claims, which Rail Madad doesn't process directly.

Language and accessibility

The app and portal work in Hindi and English (check the app for any other languages it currently offers), which matters for a country this linguistically diverse, since a complaint is easier to file accurately in your own language than translated on the fly. If you would rather read this site in Hindi, our Hindi pages cover the same live running status and station information the English site does.

Getting a complaint resolved faster

Be specific: train number, date, coach and berth for onboard issues, and a clear photo wherever possible. Vague complaints without these details take longer to route correctly. If nothing happens within a reasonable window, a few days for non-urgent issues, checking the status in-app first is faster than filing a second complaint, which can actually slow things down by splitting the record.

Frequently asked questions

What kinds of complaints can I file through Rail Madad?

Cleanliness, coach maintenance, catering and vending issues, security concerns, medical assistance requests, staff behaviour, and station-side problems like broken escalators or poor lighting.

How is Rail Madad different from calling 139?

They share the same backend, but Rail Madad lets you attach photos and gives you a trackable written reference number, while 139 gets a person on the line immediately, better for anything urgent.

How do I track the status of my complaint?

Use the reference number shown when you filed it. The app shows the complaint's progress, typically registered, assigned, then resolved.

Does Rail Madad work for both onboard and station issues?

Yes, the app asks upfront whether your complaint is about a train or a station, and adjusts the categories and questions accordingly.
