IRCTC Customer Care Number and Hours

The real IRCTC customer care number is 14646, not the old numbers still floating around online. What it handles, what it doesn't, and faster ways to get help.

A lot of IRCTC "customer care numbers" circulating on search results and forums are old, wrong, or belong to unrelated services. The number IRCTC itself lists for e-ticketing support today is 14646, working across India in 12 languages including Hindi, English, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Odia, Assamese and Malayalam. If you are calling from outside India, the numbers are +91-8044647999 or +91-8035734999.

Numbers to ignore: IRCTC does not run a WhatsApp helpline or a personal mobile number for refunds. If a search result or a social media reply gives you a private number and asks for your PNR, OTP or card details over the phone, it is very likely a scam. Stick to the numbers above or the official site.

14646 versus 139: they are different helplines

It is easy to mix these up because both show up when you search for railway support. 14646 is IRCTC's own line for anything tied to an e-ticket you booked online: booking help, payment failures, refund status and TDR filing. 139 is Indian Railways' general helpline for running status, station enquiries, security and onboard complaints, and it is answered by railway staff, not IRCTC. If your issue is about money already paid for an e-ticket, 14646 is the right number; if it's about a train right now, 139 is faster.

What IRCTC customer care can actually fix

  • Refund not credited: a cancelled or TDR-filed ticket where the amount hasn't reached your account after the usual processing window.
  • Payment deducted, ticket not booked: the most common e-ticketing complaint, usually resolved with an automatic reversal within a few working days, checkable by PNR or transaction ID.
  • Login and account issues: password resets, OTP not received, account locked after failed attempts.
  • TDR filing help: guidance on filing a Ticket Deposit Receipt when you missed a train or a train was cancelled.

What it generally cannot help with: live running status of a train (use live running status instead), platform and coach position at a station, or onboard problems like a dirty coach, which go through the 139 helpline and Rail Madad, not IRCTC.

Faster than calling: the eQuery portal

For anything that isn't urgent, IRCTC's own eQuery system at equery.irctc.co.in lets you raise a ticket, attach a screenshot or bank statement, and track a reference number without sitting on hold. Log in with the same account you booked with, since the system pulls your PNR and payment history automatically. This is usually the fastest route for refund and TDR follow-ups, and it leaves a written record if you need to escalate later.

Tip: before calling 14646, keep your PNR, the transaction ID from your bank or UPI app, and the registered mobile number ready. Agents ask for these first, and having them ready cuts the call down by minutes.

How busy the lines get

14646 fields a very high volume of calls around Tatkal booking hours (10 am and 11 am) and immediately after a major holiday travel rush, when refund and TDR queries spike. If you can wait a day, calling outside these windows, or using the eQuery portal instead, usually gets a quicker response. Weekday mid-mornings away from the Tatkal rush tend to have shorter queues than weekend evenings, when a lot of people are settling bookings for the week ahead.

Other IRCTC contacts worth saving

For IRCTC Tourism package bookings and complaints, use tourism@irctc.com. For flight bookings made through IRCTC Air, use flights@irctc.co.in. Keep these separate from the e-ticketing line, since agents on 14646 generally cannot pull up a tourism package or flight booking.

What to do while you wait for a fix

A refund or TDR case can take a few working days to settle even after you've raised it correctly, and calling again every few hours does not speed it up. What does help is checking your own booking history on the IRCTC site or app for a status change, and keeping an eye on your bank statement for the reversal, since it sometimes lands before the IRCTC portal updates. If your journey itself is still ahead of you and the ticket is fine, you don't need to call IRCTC at all: our trip planner shows seat availability and confirmation chances if you're deciding between trains, and once you're travelling, checking live running status on the train's own page tells you far more than an IVR ever will.

A short checklist before you dial

  • Have your PNR and the 10-digit transaction reference from your bank or UPI app ready.
  • Note the exact date and route of the booking, not just "last week".
  • If it's a refund query, check your bank statement first; sometimes the money has already arrived and the portal is just slow to show it.
  • Write down the complaint or reference number the agent gives you, and use it if you need to escalate through eQuery later.
