Tamil Nadu asks the Centre to fast-track a Namma Metro extension from Bommasandra to Hosur. What is proposed, what is not approved yet, and what it means now.

Tamil Nadu has asked the Centre to speed up approval for a metro corridor that would take Bengaluru's Yellow Line across the state border to Hosur. The request was made on Sunday, 11 October 2026, and reported on 12 October by Livemint, which cited The Hindu. The link is a proposal, not a service. Nothing about your current metro or train trip changes because of it. For how metro and suburban rail differ, see our explainer.

What has been proposed

The plan is to extend the Bengaluru Yellow Line of Namma Metro from its current end at Bommasandra into Hosur, the industrial hub in Tamil Nadu. Today the line runs between RV Road and Bommasandra.

According to the report, the extension would be South India's first inter-state metro link if it is approved. It is meant to improve connections between industrial and residential areas on either side of the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu border, and to support cross-border commuting as activity grows around Bengaluru and Hosur.

Who it would affect

The corridor is aimed at people who travel between Bengaluru's southern suburbs and Hosur, and at workers who commute between the industrial belts on both sides of the border. None of them can use it yet: it is only a proposed corridor, and the Yellow Line currently ends at Bommasandra.

What the Tamil Nadu chief minister asked for

The request came at the inauguration of an expanded stretch of Chennai Metro, where the chief minister also asked the Centre for faster clearances on several projects. The report lists these:

  • Chennai Metro Phase III. Approval and funding were sought for a network of nearly 65 km on three routes: Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam, Poonamallee to Sunguvarchatram, and Koyambedu to Pattabiram. The network is still a proposal in the report.
  • Coimbatore and Madurai. The Centre was asked to reconsider and approve metro rail networks for both cities.
  • High-speed rail. Dedicated corridors were requested from Chennai to Coimbatore and from Chennai to Kanniyakumari.

The expanded Chennai Metro stretch inaugurated at that event is covered in our earlier post on the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch. For the wider Chennai network, see the Chennai Metro pages.

Where things stand

The report calls the Bengaluru-Hosur link a proposed corridor and a long-pending plan, and it gives no sanction, construction start or opening date. A proposal has no timetable, so do not plan a trip around it.

Until any approval is announced, the Yellow Line is still the line between RV Road and Bommasandra.

What travellers should do now

  • Keep using the services that run today. Check the Yellow Line page for the current stations before you travel.
  • For a trip between Bengaluru and Hosur, compare trains in the trip planner instead of waiting for the metro.
  • Wait for an official announcement before you change any travel plan that depends on the link.
