Darjeeling From Kolkata by Train: An Itinerary

A complete Kolkata-to-Darjeeling plan: the overnight train to New Jalpaiguri, the road transfer or toy train up, and how many days to actually allow.

Darjeeling is a genuine multi-leg journey from Kolkata: an overnight train across the plains, then a climb of nearly 2,000 metres into the hills by road or, for part of the way, by the famous narrow-gauge toy train. Planning it properly means being realistic about how many days each leg actually takes.

The overnight train: Kolkata to NJP

The Darjeeling Mail (12343) leaves Sealdah at 22:15 and reaches New Jalpaiguri (NJP) by around 7:50 am the next morning, a run of roughly nine and a half hours that covers most of the distance overnight so you don't lose a full day of travel time. Other options on the same corridor include the overnight Padatik Express (12377), leaving Sealdah at 23:20 and reaching NJP around 9:05 am, and the daytime Kanchanjunga Express (13175), which leaves Sealdah at 6:50 am and reaches NJP around 5:55 pm, not an overnight train; check each train's own page for the current schedule before booking.

Tip: book an AC sleeper class if you can. The overnight journey is long, and arriving well-rested makes a real difference to the road transfer that follows almost immediately after you get off the train.

An alternative: travelling via Howrah

If you'd rather depart from Howrah instead of Sealdah, several other overnight trains on the same broad-gauge network reach New Jalpaiguri from Howrah, generally with similar overnight timings. Sealdah tends to have the more frequent and better-known direct options toward NJP, including the Darjeeling Mail's long-standing reputation as the classic choice, but check both stations' schedules for your travel date since departure frequency and timing can make one more convenient than the other depending on where in Kolkata you're starting from.

Food and rest stops along the way

The Darjeeling Mail and similar overnight trains on this route serve catering depending on class, and stations along the way have platform vendors if you'd rather buy something fresh during a longer halt. Since the journey is long, carrying a light dinner or snacks for the first few hours is a reasonable backup regardless of your class of travel.

NJP to Darjeeling: road or toy train?

Almost every visitor takes a shared jeep or hired car from NJP up to Darjeeling, a drive of about 3 to 3.5 hours through Siliguri and up the hill roads. It's the practical choice after a long overnight train, since it gets you checked into your hotel by early afternoon with a half day still ahead.

The alternative is the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway's own passenger trains, which cover the same climb by rail in roughly 7.5 to 8.5 hours, a much slower and more tiring option right after an overnight journey. Most travellers save the toy train experience for the short Darjeeling-to-Ghum joy ride once they're already settled in, rather than using the full NJP-to-Darjeeling passenger service as their main transfer.

OptionTimeBest for
Shared jeep or car3-3.5 hoursMost travellers, especially after an overnight train
Full toy train (NJP to Darjeeling)7.5-8.5 hoursRail enthusiasts with a spare day and energy for a long ride
Toy train joy ride (Darjeeling to Ghum, later)About 2 hoursEveryone, once you're already in Darjeeling

How many days should this realistically take?

Counting travel on both ends, plan for at least four to five days total: one day getting from Kolkata to Darjeeling (overnight train plus the road transfer, arriving early-to-mid afternoon), two full days in and around Darjeeling itself, and a return leg that mirrors the outbound journey. Trying to compress this into a long weekend means very little actual time in the hills relative to time spent travelling, so a shorter trip is only worth it if Darjeeling is truly the only stop on your itinerary and you can accept a light two-day visit.

Don't book a tight same-day onward connection from NJP. Overnight trains can run late into the morning, and if your jeep or car is booked for a fixed time right after a scheduled arrival, a delay can throw off the whole day. Build in some slack, or book road transport only after your train has actually reached NJP.

What to do with your two days in Darjeeling

A typical split covers Tiger Hill for sunrise on one morning (weather permitting), the toy train joy ride from Darjeeling to Ghum, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Batasia Loop, and the tea gardens around Happy Valley. Chowrasta and the Mall Road area are good for an evening walk and dinner both nights. See our Darjeeling toy train itinerary for a closer look at planning the joy ride specifically, including booking advice and what the ride does and doesn't cover.

Best season for clear views

October to December is generally the clearest window for Kanchenjunga views, with March to May a close second and the added bonus of rhododendrons in bloom. Avoid the June to September monsoon, when the toy train can be suspended after landslides and mountain views are unreliable at best.

The return journey

Reverse the outbound plan: a road transfer back down to NJP timed to comfortably catch your overnight train, since missing it means waiting a full day for the next one on most routes. Check your return train's typical departure punctuality on its own page and aim to reach NJP with a reasonable buffer rather than cutting it close after a mountain road that can be affected by traffic or weather.

    Frequently asked questions

Which overnight train from Kolkata gets me closest to Darjeeling?

The Darjeeling Mail (12343) runs from Sealdah to New Jalpaiguri overnight, arriving by around 7:50 am, the classic route travellers use before the road transfer up to Darjeeling.

How many days should this realistically take including road transfer?

Plan for four to five days total: one day for the overnight train and road transfer, at least two full days in Darjeeling, and a mirrored return leg.

Should I ride the toy train the full route or just part of it?

Most travellers use a shared jeep or car for the NJP-to-Darjeeling transfer itself, since the full toy train route takes 7.5-8.5 hours, and save the toy train experience for the shorter Darjeeling-to-Ghum joy ride once they've arrived.

What's the best time of year for clear mountain views?

October to December is generally clearest, with March to May a close second. The June to September monsoon brings poor visibility and possible toy train suspensions after landslides.
