KSR Bengaluru (SBC), still widely called Bangalore City station, is the main arrival point for long-distance trains into the city and sits close to the central business district, which makes it a convenient base for a sightseeing day without needing to travel far.
Distances from the station
| Place | Distance from SBC | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Cubbon Park | About 3 km | 10-15 min by auto |
| Vidhana Soudha | About 3.5 km | 10-15 min |
| Bangalore Palace | About 5 km | 15-20 min |
| Lalbagh Botanical Garden | About 6 km | 20-25 min |
| MG Road and Commercial Street | About 5-6 km | 15-20 min |
A single day from SBC
Start with Cubbon Park in the early morning, when it's cool and quiet, then walk or take a short ride to Vidhana Soudha and the High Court building nearby for a look at the architecture, both striking from outside; Vidhana Soudha also runs paid guided walking tours on Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays, booked through Karnataka Tourism, while the High Court is not open for tours. Mid-morning, head to Lalbagh Botanical Garden, especially worthwhile if the Glass House has a flower show on, which happens twice a year around Republic Day and Independence Day. Afternoon at Bangalore Palace, a Tudor-style building open for a paid walkthrough, then finish the day on MG Road or Commercial Street for shopping and dinner.
Getting out of the station
A prepaid auto and taxi stand operates outside SBC, and ride-hailing apps work reliably across the city. The Namma Metro's Purple Line connects near the station and reaches several other useful points across the city, worth considering over a road taxi during peak traffic hours, which in Bengaluru can start surprisingly early in the morning and run well into the evening.
Best time of year
Bengaluru's elevation keeps it milder than most Indian cities year round, but October to February is still the most pleasant stretch, cool mornings and comfortable afternoons. March to May warms up, though rarely to the extremes of the plains cities. The June to September monsoon brings regular showers, heavier in some years than others, which is worth checking if your plans depend on being outdoors at Lalbagh or Cubbon Park for extended periods.
Food to try
Bengaluru's classic South Indian breakfast spots, many of them decades-old institutions near MG Road and the central business district, are worth an early stop before Cubbon Park; a proper masala dosa and filter coffee is a good way to start the day. The city's newer craft brewery and cafe scene, concentrated around Indiranagar and Koramangala, sits further out but is a reasonable evening detour if you're staying an extra night.
Where to stay
Staying near MG Road or the central business district keeps you within easy reach of both the station and the main sights listed above, since most of them sit in a rough arc between SBC and MG Road. Budget options cluster closer to the station itself, useful if you're catching an early or late train and want to minimise travel time on either end of the trip.
Shopping between sights
Commercial Street and MG Road cover most tastes, from budget clothing and accessories on Commercial Street to the more upscale shops and malls along MG Road and Brigade Road. Both sit close enough together that they can be covered on foot in a single stop rather than treating them as separate trips, and both are an easy add-on to the end of a Lalbagh or Bangalore Palace afternoon.
If you have a second day
Nandi Hills, about 60 km north of the city, is a popular sunrise trip that needs an early start and most of a morning. Wonderland or one of the city's other amusement parks works well for a family day if you're travelling with kids. Both are separate day trips rather than additions to the central-city itinerary above. Our trip planner is also useful here if you're weighing Bengaluru against a short onward hop to Mysuru rather than a Nandi Hills day trip.
A note on the metro
Namma Metro has expanded steadily over the past several years, and by 2026 covers a reasonable spread of the central city, though not every sight in this guide sits directly on a metro line. For the stops it does reach, especially the Majestic interchange near the station and stretches toward MG Road, it's usually faster and cheaper than a road taxi during the city's busiest traffic windows.
Which trains connect to Bengaluru
SBC has extensive connections across South India and beyond, including overnight trains from Chennai, Mysuru, Mumbai and further afield. If you're arriving on an overnight service and planning a same-day sightseeing start, our guide to reading live running status is worth a quick look the evening before, so you know roughly what time to expect and how much of that first day you'll actually have, since even a short delay on an overnight run changes how early you can realistically start.
