Navratri trip to Vaishno Devi by train
Taking trains to Katra for Vaishno Devi during Navratri, travel timing from major cities, yatra registration, and how to plan your pilgrimage.

Navratri brings very large crowds to the Vaishno Devi shrine above Katra in Jammu and Kashmir, and the train is the most practical way to reach the area. Jammutavi (JAT) is the main railhead, about 50 km from Katra by road. Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) is the station at Katra itself, and the pilgrimage on foot starts from Katra.
Which trains and when to depart
Two good options from Delhi are on our data. The Uttar S Kranti (12445) runs daily from New Delhi to Katra, leaving at 20:50 and arriving at 07:55, about 11 hours. The Jammu Rajdhani (12425) runs daily from New Delhi to Jammutavi, leaving at 20:40 and arriving at 05:00, about 8 hours 20 minutes. There is also a daily special, 04081, to Katra, but specials can change, so check the page before you plan around it.
From other cities, use the trip planner, which shows seat availability, confirmation chances, alternative boarding stations and two-train connections. Trains to Jammu and Katra fill up around Navratri, so book as soon as your booking window opens.
Katra station vs Jammu station
If your train goes to SVDK, you arrive in Katra directly and can start your yatra preparation straight away. Not every Jammu-bound train goes on to Katra, so check your train's stops in the trip planner. If your train ends at Jammutavi, you will need to travel about 50 km by road to Katra; taxis and buses run on this route, and travel time depends heavily on traffic, which is worse during Navratri.
Katra has hotels, dharamshalas, food stalls and shops. Many pilgrims arrive, rest, and begin the climb early the next morning.
Yatra registration
You need a yatra registration slip before you start the climb. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board offers registration online and also at counters in Katra. It is free of charge. Carry a photo ID for every member of your group, because the slip is checked at the entry point.
Registration rules, any daily limits and the process can change, especially in busy periods, so check the Shrine Board website for the current process before you travel.
The climb: timing, gear and conditions
The walk from Katra to the Bhawan (the cave shrine) is roughly 12 to 13 km one way, along a paved and covered track. Most people take several hours, and the time varies a lot with your fitness and the crowd. Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes, carry water and a light snack, and keep warm clothes for the evening, as it gets cooler higher up.
The track has resting places, tea stalls and food shops along the way. Starting early in the morning avoids the afternoon heat and gives you time to return in daylight if you plan a same-day trip.
If you cannot walk the whole way, the Shrine Board and local operators offer options such as ponies, palanquins and a helicopter service. Rates and availability are set by the Shrine Board, so check them on the official website instead of relying on a number in a blog.
At the shrine
The shrine is a natural cave, and the darshan queue moves continuously. The time you spend inside is short. Mobile phones, cameras and some other items are usually not allowed at the shrine, and cloakrooms are available, so check the current rules on the Shrine Board website.
Many pilgrims do the whole trip in a day, while others stay overnight on the way. A common plan is to arrive in Katra, register and rest, climb the next morning, return the same day or the next, and then take a train home.
When is Navratri
Navratri follows the lunar calendar. In 2026 the autumn Navratri falls in mid October, ending with Dussehra a few days later, so confirm exact dates in a trusted calendar before you book. The days around the end of Navratri are often the busiest. Chaitra Navratri in spring is another popular time to visit.
Before you leave
- Check your train's live running status on its page before heading to the station.
- Keep photo ID for every traveller, along with a printed or saved copy of your registration slip.
Costs
Train fares depend on the train, class and when you book, so use the planner or your booking app for the exact figure. Local transport, hotel rooms and food prices in Katra vary by season and rise during Navratri. Book your stay early and keep some buffer in your budget for the festival period.
Nearby places and extending your stay
If you have extra time, Jammu city has the Raghunath Temple and other sights. You can also read our guide to the Golden Temple in Amritsar by train, or the places near Rishikesh if you want to add another pilgrimage stop on the way back, though these need separate train journeys.
