The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is one of three UNESCO-listed mountain railways in India, alongside the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and the Kalka-Shimla line, and the full journey from the plains to Ooty happens in two distinct stages: a broad-gauge run to Mettupalayam, then the narrow-gauge rack railway climbing into the hills. This plan covers both, with the timings that make the connection work.

Should you start from Coimbatore or Mettupalayam

Coimbatore is where most travellers actually arrive, it has the region's main airport and best long-distance rail connectivity, so start there. The Nilagiri SF Express (12671) covers Coimbatore to Mettupalayam in about an hour, departing early at 05:20 to connect with the toy train's morning departure. If you're already staying near Mettupalayam, you can skip this leg and start directly from there, but for most people, Coimbatore is the practical starting point.

The toy train itself

The MTP UAM Passenger (56136) departs Mettupalayam at 07:10 and reaches Udagamandalam by 11:55, just under five hours to cover a relatively short distance as the rack-and-pinion system hauls the train up some of the steepest gradients on India's rail network between Kallar and Coonoor (above Coonoor the line runs without the rack). This is genuinely slow travel by design, the mountain terrain and the aging but carefully maintained rack system don't allow for speed, and that's exactly the point. Sit on either side for good views, since the line switches back repeatedly through the hills rather than following a single valley wall.

Tip: book well ahead, especially in peak season, April-May and the winter holidays. The toy train has limited capacity and sells out fast, unlike a standard broad-gauge train where a last-minute Tatkal booking is often still possible.

What you'll see along the way

The climb takes you from the plains near Mettupalayam through dense forest and past waterfalls in the early stretches, then into the tea estates the Nilgiris are known for as you gain altitude. Coonoor, roughly the midpoint of the climb, is itself a worthwhile stop if you have the time to break the journey, a quieter hill town than Ooty with its own tea-estate walks and a slightly less touristy feel.

A day in Ooty once you arrive

Ooty Lake, a short walk or auto ride from the station, is the classic first stop, particularly for a boat ride if you've arrived with energy after the train journey. The Government Botanical Garden, with its collection of both native and imported species dating back to the colonial era, and Doddabetta Peak, the highest point in the Nilgiris with views across the range on a clear day, round out a full day. Tea estate visits and tastings are easy to fit in almost anywhere around town, given how central tea is to the local economy.

Where to stay

Ooty town itself has the widest choice of hotels and homestays, from simple budget lodges to colonial-era heritage properties, and staying centrally makes it easy to reach the lake and botanical garden on foot or with a short auto ride. Coonoor, if you choose to break the journey there, offers a quieter, less commercial alternative with its own tea-estate stays, worth considering if Ooty's peak-season crowds aren't what you're after.

Food to try

Nilgiri cuisine reflects the region's tea-estate history and its mix of Tamil and colonial-era influences: try the varkey, a flaky local biscuit sold in Ooty's older bakeries, and homemade chocolate, something the town has become known for well beyond its tea. A cup of fresh Nilgiri tea from a local estate, rather than a branded packet, is worth seeking out for comparison with what you'd usually get at home, and most estate visits end with exactly this kind of tasting included.

Booking from Mettupalayam or Coimbatore

Book the toy train leg (Mettupalayam to Ooty) as its own reservation, it's a separate booking from the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam connector even though the two are designed to link up on the timetable. If you're travelling as a group in peak season, book both legs together and well ahead, since a missed toy train departure because the connector ran late means a long wait for the next available service, not turning up and walking on.

Delays on the connector matter more here. Because the toy train has limited daily departures, a late-running Coimbatore-Mettupalayam train can cost you the whole morning's toy train slot. Check the connector's live running status the evening before if your connection is tight.

Best season for clear views

January to March tends to give the clearest skies for the climb and the views from Doddabetta, with September also often good. The southwest monsoon, roughly June to August, brings heavy rain and mist to the Nilgiris, and the northeast monsoon adds rain around October and November, when landslides occasionally suspend the toy train, atmospheric in its own way but with a real chance of the views being obscured entirely. April to June is peak tourist season for the pleasant hill-station climate, which also means the biggest crowds and tightest toy train availability, so book that leg as far ahead as your schedule allows if you are travelling in this window.

    Frequently asked questions

What's the full toy train route from the plains up to Ooty?

From Coimbatore, a broad-gauge connector reaches Mettupalayam in about an hour, then the narrow-gauge rack railway climbs from Mettupalayam to Udagamandalam (Ooty) in roughly five hours, via Coonoor.

How long does the toy train journey actually take?

About four hours and forty-five minutes for the Mettupalayam to Ooty stretch alone, not counting the connecting train from Coimbatore.

Should I book the toy train from Mettupalayam or Coimbatore?

Most travellers start from Coimbatore, which has the main airport and best long-distance connections, and take a short connecting train to Mettupalayam to catch the toy train's morning departure.

What's the best season for clear views on this route?

January to March generally gives the clearest skies. The June-August monsoon, and the northeast monsoon showers of October-November, often bring mist and rain that can obscure the views.
