Senior Citizen Train Concession: Current Rules for 2026
The senior citizen train fare concession has been suspended since March 2020 and remains so. What was offered before, what's still active, and where to check.

A lot of pages online still describe the senior citizen train concession as if it's active, quoting the old 40% and 50% discount figures. It isn't, and hasn't been since March 2020. Here's the actual current position, and what to check before you assume otherwise.
What the concession used to be
Before it was suspended, Indian Railways offered a concession on the base fare in all classes of Mail and Express trains, including Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto: 40% off for male senior citizens aged 60 and above, and 50% off for female senior citizens aged 58 and above. It applied across reserved classes and required the passenger to select the concession option and confirm their age at the time of booking.
Is the concession still suspended in 2026
As of the time of writing, yes, the concession remains suspended. It was withdrawn as a COVID-19 era measure from 20 March 2020, and it has not been restored since, despite periodic questions raised in Parliament (MPs raised it again in the Lok Sabha in March 2026) and ongoing public demand for its return. Because this is exactly the kind of rule that can change with a single budget announcement or policy notification, don't rely on this or any other page for the live answer close to your travel date, check the IRCTC website or the current Ministry of Railways notifications directly when you book.
Will the concession be restored
There's no way for us to tell you the answer to this with certainty, and any specific timeline you see quoted should be treated with scepticism. Restoration has been raised as a proposal and a topic of parliamentary questions on multiple occasions since the suspension, but as of the time of writing it has not been reinstated. If and when it changes, it will be announced through an official Ministry of Railways or IRCTC notification, which is the source to check rather than a news article or social media post repeating an unconfirmed claim.
What senior citizens do get, concession aside
- Lower berth preference: men aged 60 and above and women aged 58 and above get priority allotment of lower berths, subject to availability, from a lower berth quota that also covers women aged 45 and above and pregnant women. This is separate from the fare concession and remains active.
- Separate ticket counters at many stations, reducing wait time for senior passengers booking or enquiring in person.
- Wheelchair assistance can be requested in advance through IRCTC or by contacting the station, useful for senior travellers with mobility concerns regardless of the fare question.
Do senior citizens get a lower berth automatically
The reservation system is set up to allot lower berths to eligible senior citizens automatically where available, even if no preference is selected, but it is subject to availability, not a guarantee. Selecting it during booking does no harm, though it can't override seat availability on a heavily booked train. Check the trip planner for current seat availability across trains on your route if a specific service looks full.
Is ID proof mandatory to claim any of this
Yes, for anything that depends on verifying age, whether that's a lower berth preference or, if the fare concession is ever restored, the discount itself, a valid government-issued photo ID showing date of birth is standard practice and worth carrying regardless of what benefit you're claiming.
Other concessions that remain unaffected
The 2020 suspension specifically targeted the general senior citizen fare concession. When most concessions were withdrawn in 2020, the railways kept those for four categories of persons with disabilities, eleven categories of patients, and students, and these still follow their own separate rules. If you fall into one of these other categories, check the specific rules for that concession rather than assuming the senior citizen suspension applies to your situation too.
A practical booking checklist
- Check the fare shown at booking, if a senior citizen discount option doesn't appear, the fare shown is the current full fare, not an error.
- Select lower berth preference explicitly if travelling with a senior citizen, don't assume it's automatic.
- Carry a valid photo ID with date of birth for the travelling senior citizen regardless of which benefit you're relying on.
- If you need wheelchair assistance at the station, request it in advance through IRCTC or by contacting the station directly, rather than assuming it will be available on arrival without notice. See our guide on coach position codes for finding your coach quickly once you are on the platform.
Where to check the current status
For the live, current answer rather than what any single article states, check the IRCTC website directly when booking, since it will show the concession option (or its continued absence) at the point of purchase, which is the most reliable real-time indicator available. Press Information Bureau releases are the other authoritative source for any policy change on this specific issue. Once you have booked, use our live running status pages to track the train itself, that part of the site works the same regardless of what fare you paid.

Frequently asked questions
What age qualifies for senior citizen concession on trains?
Before suspension, the concession applied to men aged 60 and above and women aged 58 and above. The concession itself is currently suspended, though age-based benefits like lower berth preference still use these same age thresholds.
Is the concession still suspended in 2026?
Yes, as of the time of writing. It was withdrawn in March 2020 and has not been restored since, despite repeated public demand and parliamentary questions on the subject.
Will the concession be restored in the next railway budget?
There's no reliable way to predict this. Any restoration would come through an official Ministry of Railways or IRCTC notification, which is the source to check rather than speculation.
Do senior citizens get a lower berth automatically?
The system tries to allot lower berths to eligible senior citizens automatically, subject to availability, so it isn't guaranteed. Selecting the preference at booking does no harm.
Is ID proof mandatory to claim the concession?
For anything that depends on verified age, a valid government-issued photo ID showing date of birth is standard practice and worth carrying, regardless of which specific age-based benefit you're using.
