Tamil Nadu's great Dravidian temples are spread across four towns that don't sit in a straight line, which makes the order you visit them in matter more than usual. This route starts and ends in Chennai and covers Madurai, Rameswaram and Thanjavur in between, sequenced around trains that actually run rather than a straight-line map distance.
The route at a glance
| Day | Leg | Train |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chennai, then overnight to Madurai | Pandian SF Express (12637) |
| 2-3 | Madurai, day trip to Rameswaram | MDU RMM Passenger (56711) and back |
| 4 | Madurai to Thanjavur | Sct-mv Express (16848) |
| 5 | Thanjavur to Tiruchirapalli | CBE Janshatabdi (12083) |
| 5-6 | Overnight to Chennai | RMM MS Express (16752) |
Why start from Chennai, if you're flying in
Chennai has the region's main international airport, so it's the natural start and end point even though it isn't itself a temple town on this circuit. Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore is worth an hour or two on your first afternoon if you have the time before the overnight train south.
Day 1-2: overnight to Madurai
Board the Pandian SF Express (12637), which runs daily from Chennai Egmore (MS, not Chennai Central) at 21:40 and reaches Madurai by 05:25, a comfortable overnight run that saves a hotel night. Meenakshi Amman Temple, with its towering, densely carved gopurams, deserves a full morning, arrive early to see it before the midday heat and crowds build. The Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace, a short auto ride away, rounds out an easy first day.
Day 3: Rameswaram as a day trip
Take the MDU RMM Passenger (56711), departing Madurai at 07:00 and reaching Rameswaram by 10:25, about three and a half hours. Ramanathaswamy Temple, with its famously long corridors of carved pillars, is the main draw, and it's a working pilgrimage site as much as a monument, expect crowds and a specific etiquette around the ritual bathing area. If you have time, Dhanushkodi, the abandoned ghost town at the very tip of the peninsula, is a worthwhile add-on before you head back. Return on the Amritha Express (16344), departing Rameswaram at 13:30 and reaching Madurai by 16:05, leaving the evening free back in Madurai.

Day 4: Madurai to Thanjavur
The daily Sct-mv Express (16848) leaves Madurai at 10:10 and reaches Thanjavur by 13:54, a daytime run of a little under four hours. Thanjavur's Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the great achievements of Chola-era architecture, is worth the whole afternoon, its scale and the precision of its carving reward slow, unhurried looking rather than a quick walk-through.
Day 5: Thanjavur to Tiruchirapalli, then the overnight to Chennai
There's no direct train from Thanjavur back to Chennai, so the practical move is a short hop to Tiruchirapalli (Trichy) first. Spend the morning finishing up in Thanjavur, then take the CBE Janshatabdi (12083), departing at 16:20 and reaching Trichy by 17:15, just under an hour. It does not run on Tuesdays, so on a Tuesday use any of the other Thanjavur-Trichy trains or a bus. Catch sunset from the Rock Fort Temple, perched on an outcrop above the city with views over the Kaveri river. Late that night, board the daily RMM MS Express (16752), which departs Trichy at 23:10 and reaches Chennai Egmore by 07:50 the next morning.

Day 6: back in Chennai
You'll arrive back in Chennai by breakfast time, leaving most of the day for anything you missed on day one, or simply time to rest before an onward flight. If your schedule allows an extra night, Srirangam's Ranganathaswamy Temple, one of the largest functioning temple complexes in the world, sits just outside Trichy and is worth fitting in before the overnight train if you can add a day to this plan.

Realistic length for this circuit
Six days is workable if you keep Rameswaram to a day trip and accept the two overnight train legs as part of the plan. Extending to eight or nine days lets you slow down in Madurai and Thanjavur and add Srirangam properly, worthwhile if you have the time, since all four towns reward more than a rushed half-day visit.

What to eat along the way
Each of these towns has its own food identity worth building into the day. Madurai is famous for jigarthanda, a cold dessert drink, and for its early-morning idli and filter coffee stalls near the temple. Thanjavur's thali tradition runs rich and buttery by south Indian standards, a legacy of its royal kitchens. Trichy has some of the region's best filter coffee, worth a stop near the Rock Fort before boarding the overnight train. Rameswaram, being a coastal pilgrimage town, leans toward simple vegetarian thalis served on banana leaf near the temple, in keeping with the ritual fasting many pilgrims observe before the temple bath. Carry cash in the smaller towns, card acceptance is patchier away from the main hotels.

Frequently asked questions
What's the best train sequence for Madurai, Rameswaram and Thanjavur?
Madurai first from Chennai overnight, a day trip out to Rameswaram and back, then on to Thanjavur, and finally a short hop to Tiruchirapalli for the overnight train back to Chennai, since there's no direct Thanjavur-Chennai service.
How many days should this temple circuit realistically take?
Six days if Rameswaram is a day trip from Madurai. Eight to nine days if you want to slow down in each city and add Srirangam near Trichy.
Which stop is best to start from if flying into Chennai?
Chennai itself, with an overnight train south to Madurai on your first night, which also saves a hotel stay.
Are overnight trains available between these temple towns?
Yes, both the Chennai-Madurai and the Tiruchirapalli-Chennai legs run well-timed overnight services, useful for saving time and a hotel night on a circuit like this.
