Tatkal Booking Time: AC vs Non-AC Opening (2026)

Tatkal opens at 10:00 IST for AC classes and 11:00 for sleeper, one day before the journey date. What that means if your train starts from a different city.

Tatkal has two separate opening times, not one, and mixing them up is the most common reason people miss the booking window entirely.

What time Tatkal opens for AC classes

Tatkal booking for AC classes, which covers AC 2-tier, AC 3-tier, AC 3-economy and AC chair car (IRCTC lists First AC and Executive class as having no Tatkal), opens at 10:00 IST. This is one calendar day before the date of journey, and the booking counter or IRCTC window opens exactly at 10:00, not a minute before.

What time Tatkal opens for non-AC classes

Sleeper class and other non-AC categories open an hour later, at 11:00 IST, also one day before the date of journey. Railways staggers the two on purpose so that both queues are not fighting for the same server capacity at the same second.

Tip: "one day before" means the date of journey minus one, and the window covers only that single date. If your train runs on the 15th, Tatkal for it opens at 10:00 or 11:00 on the 14th, and stays open until the quota runs out or the reservation chart is prepared, whichever comes first.

Only one Tatkal booking per class opens for a given train and date, and the quota is a fixed slice of total seats set aside for this purpose, not the whole coach. That is why popular routes on weekday mornings can go from fully open to fully booked in a matter of minutes once the clock starts.

Seats left, before you book

Aadhaar OTP is now mandatory for Tatkal. Since mid-2025, every Tatkal booking, whether on the IRCTC website or app, at a reservation counter or through an agent, needs Aadhaar-based OTP authentication. Link and verify Aadhaar on your IRCTC account well before the window opens, or the booking will stall at the OTP step. Our guide on linking Aadhaar to IRCTC for Tatkal walks through it.

Why the IRCTC site slows down right at 10 or 11

Every Tatkal seat on every long-distance train nationwide opens for booking in the same one-hour window, so IRCTC's servers take a genuine spike in concurrent users right at the top of the hour. The captcha and queueing screens that show up during this spike are there to spread out the load; they are not a sign that something has gone wrong with your booking. Being logged in, with your passenger list, berth preference and payment method already saved, is what actually saves time, since none of that can be done faster once the clock strikes the hour.

Booking Tatkal for a train that starts from a different city

This is the rule that catches people out. The one-day-before window is counted from the train's originating station's date of departure, not from your own boarding station. If a train leaves its source city on Monday and only reaches your boarding station on Tuesday, Tatkal for your Tuesday journey opens on Sunday at 10:00 or 11:00, tied to the Monday start date, not on Monday for a Tuesday board.

In practice this means long-distance trains that start a day or more before they reach you can have a Tatkal window that feels early relative to your own travel date. Check the train's full route and starting point rather than assuming the window is always exactly one day before you personally board.

New to train travel?
Missing the originating date rule is the single biggest reason Tatkal tickets seem "sold out instantly" for people boarding midway down a route. By the time their boarding station's date comes around, the quota opened, and often filled, a day or more earlier.

Documents you need for a Tatkal ticket

  • A valid original photo ID for at least one passenger in the booking, from IRCTC's accepted list (Aadhaar, PAN, passport, voter ID, driving licence and a few others).
  • That same ID must be carried physically during the journey and matched with the ticket if checked by railway staff.
  • An IRCTC account with saved passenger details speeds up the actual booking step, though it is not a separate document requirement.

Tatkal charges, in short

Tatkal tickets carry an extra charge on top of the base fare, structured as a percentage of the fare with a minimum and maximum by class, and it differs for AC and non-AC classes. The exact rupee amounts are revised from time to time, so rather than quote a figure that may be out of date by the time you read this, check the charge shown at the payment step on IRCTC, which always reflects the current rule. As a general pattern, the percentage is the same for sleeper and AC classes (it is lower for second sitting), but the minimum and maximum rupee amounts are higher for AC classes.

Tatkal tickets are also non-refundable in the ordinary cancellation sense; a confirmed Tatkal ticket that is cancelled gets no refund except in specific situations such as the train itself being cancelled or delayed by several hours. Waiting list Tatkal tickets that do not confirm are refunded automatically, similar to the general quota rule.

After you book: what to check next

A Tatkal ticket confirms your seat, but it does not confirm your train will run on time. Once you are booked, check the live running status for your train the morning of travel, especially in winter when fog delays are common on north Indian routes and can push a Tatkal-booked departure back by hours.

If you are still deciding between two trains on the same route, our trip planner shows current seat availability across classes and quotas for a given date, which is a faster way to compare options than opening several train pages one at a time. A search like Delhi to Jaipur shows how it lays out the results.

Tatkal timings and charges follow the current Indian Railways commercial circular; always confirm on IRCTC if a rule seems to have changed since this was written.

Frequently asked questions

What time does Tatkal booking open for AC classes?

10:00 IST, one day before the date of journey as counted from the train's originating station.

What time does Tatkal open for non-AC (sleeper) classes?

11:00 IST, also one day before the date of journey, an hour after AC classes to spread the booking load.

Why does the IRCTC site slow down right at 10am/11am?

Every Tatkal seat on every train nationwide opens at the same time, creating a genuine spike in concurrent users. The captcha and queue screens exist to manage that load, not because something is broken.

Can I book Tatkal for a train that starts from a different city?

Yes, but the booking window is tied to the date the train leaves its originating station, not the date it reaches your boarding station. For trains that start a day or more before they reach you, the Tatkal window opens earlier than travellers usually expect.

What documents do I need for a Tatkal ticket?

A valid original photo ID from IRCTC's accepted list, for at least one passenger in the booking, carried physically during travel. Your IRCTC account also has to be Aadhaar-verified, because Aadhaar OTP authentication is mandatory for Tatkal bookings.
