Linking Aadhaar to IRCTC for Tatkal: Why It's Required
Aadhaar authentication is now required for Tatkal on IRCTC and for online booking on the day reservation opens. What it means, and how to link it yourself.

Aadhaar linking on IRCTC gets asked about constantly around Tatkal, mostly because of a rumour that it's some kind of guaranteed fast lane. It isn't. Since 1 July 2025 it is simply a requirement: only Aadhaar-authenticated users can book Tatkal tickets on the IRCTC website and app, and since 15 July 2025 every Tatkal booking, including at counters and through agents, needs an OTP check. Without it you cannot book Tatkal at all.
What linking Aadhaar actually does
Once your Aadhaar is linked and OTP-verified on your IRCTC profile, your account is treated as "Aadhaar-verified" for booking purposes. That lets you book Tatkal, where an Aadhaar OTP is also checked at booking time, and book general tickets online on the day the advance reservation window opens for a train. That rule started in October 2025 as the first 15 minutes only and, since 12 January 2026, covers the whole opening day (08:00 to midnight) on the IRCTC website and app. Authorised agents are barred from booking Tatkal in the first 30 minutes (10:00 to 10:30 for AC, 11:00 to 11:30 for non-AC). Rules like these get revised, so confirm the current position on IRCTC close to your booking date.
Does Aadhaar linking guarantee a Tatkal seat
No. Tatkal quota on any given train is a small, fixed number of berths, and every other verified user is trying for the same seats at the same time. Aadhaar verification is the entry ticket to the queue, it doesn't create more seats. On a route with heavy demand, even a verified account with a fast connection can still miss out if the quota fills in the first minute.
When can you book your ticket?
Uses the 60-day advance booking window (journey day not counted) and the Tatkal opening times (10:00 AC, 11:00 non-AC, one day before). On the day booking opens, only Aadhaar-verified IRCTC users can book online between 08:00 and midnight. Check IRCTC if a rule changes.
Is Aadhaar linking mandatory for normal booking
Mostly no. You can book regular, non-Tatkal tickets on IRCTC without Aadhaar authentication, except on the opening day of the advance reservation window for a train, which since 12 January 2026 is limited to Aadhaar-authenticated users online from 08:00 to midnight. Counter bookings of general tickets are not affected by that opening-day rule.
How to check if your account is already linked
Log in to IRCTC, go to your profile section, and look for the Aadhaar or KYC status. If it shows as verified, you're set. If not, you can usually complete the linking from the same screen: enter your Aadhaar number, and IRCTC sends an OTP to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar (via UIDAI) to confirm it's really you. That mobile number needs to be current with UIDAI for the OTP to arrive, which is a separate thing from your IRCTC account's own registered mobile number, and mixing the two up is a common reason the OTP doesn't show up.

Step by step: linking Aadhaar to IRCTC
- Log in to your IRCTC account on the website or app.
- Go to My Profile and find the Aadhaar or KYC verification option.
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number.
- Confirm the OTP sent to the mobile number registered with UIDAI, not necessarily the one on your IRCTC account.
- Check that the status updates to verified before your next Tatkal booking attempt, ideally a day or two ahead, not minutes before the window opens.
What actually decides whether you get a Tatkal seat
Once you are verified, other factors decide the outcome. A fast, stable internet connection, having your passenger and payment details pre-saved so you aren't typing under pressure, and picking a boarding station and train with a realistic chance of quota left all matter as much or more. If Tatkal consistently isn't working out for a route you travel often, it's worth checking the trip planner for alternative trains or nearby boarding stations with better availability odds instead of relying on Tatkal every time.
What to do if Tatkal doesn't come through
If the quota fills before you get through, don't assume the trip is off. Check live running status and current availability for other trains on the same route, since a slightly less convenient departure time often still has seats. For very short-notice travel, the current chart-preparation and waitlist rules on IRCTC are also worth checking directly, since a lower waitlist number on a popular train can still confirm before departure.
Why this rule exists at all
The Aadhaar requirement was introduced largely to push back against automated and agent-driven booking that used to dominate the first seconds of Tatkal openings, leaving genuine travellers with almost no real chance at a seat. Tying booking to a verified government ID makes it harder to run large numbers of fake or duplicate accounts through the system, and the 30-minute agent restriction keeps the opening rush for individual travellers.
If English isn't the easiest language to navigate IRCTC's verification screens in, the same account and Aadhaar-linking steps are described on our Hindi pages alongside live running status information, which can help if you're walking a family member through the process over the phone.

Frequently asked questions
Does Aadhaar linking guarantee a Tatkal seat?
No. Aadhaar authentication is simply required to book Tatkal at all since July 2025. Tatkal quota is still limited and can fill up within minutes among verified users.
What extra booking window does Aadhaar linking unlock?
It isn't an extra window any more: without Aadhaar authentication you can't book Tatkal at all. Verified users can also book general tickets online on the day reservation opens, which unverified users can't, and agents are kept out of the first 30 minutes of Tatkal. Confirm the current rule on IRCTC.
Is Aadhaar linking mandatory for normal booking?
Not for most bookings. Regular non-Tatkal tickets don't need it, except on the day the advance reservation window opens for a train, which since 12 January 2026 is limited to Aadhaar-authenticated users on IRCTC's website and app.
How do I check if my account is already linked?
Log in to IRCTC, open My Profile, and look at the Aadhaar or KYC verification status. If it isn't verified, you can usually complete it from the same screen using an OTP sent to the mobile number registered with UIDAI.
