Diwali travel in 2026 comes down to three clocks: the advance booking window, the Tatkal opening times, and the reservation charts. Get those right and the rest is choosing between a few good trains. This checklist is written for a trip home that has to work on specific dates, with a plan B that is already booked or ready.

Step 1: Book the outbound and the return together

Reserved tickets open 60 days before the date of journey, excluding the travel day, at 8:00 am IST. At the time of writing, that means journeys up to about 26 December 2026 are already bookable, so every Diwali and Chhath date in November is inside the window now. The count runs from the journey date, not from today, so a return on 15 November opened in September.

Book the return on the same day as the outbound. Festival trips home are where a return ticket is most likely to end up on a waiting list, and the date you postpone is often the one that fills first. Our ARP guide shows how the count works for any specific date.

Step 2: Know the Tatkal clock

Tatkal is the fallback for people who could not book in advance. It opens one day before the journey, and the opening time depends on the class:

ClassesTatkal opensExample: train on 8 November
AC 2-tier, AC 3-tier, AC 3-economy, AC chair car10:00 IST7 November, 10:00 IST
Sleeper and other non-AC11:00 IST7 November, 11:00 IST

Aadhaar-based OTP authentication is mandatory for Tatkal bookings, whether online, at a counter or through an agent. Have your Aadhaar-linked mobile number ready and log in before the opening time, not at the stroke of ten, because popular routes can sell out very quickly.

A Tatkal seat is never guaranteed. Our confirmation chances guide explains why some routes are much harder than others. Treat Tatkal as something that sits on top of a booked or waitlisted plan, not as the plan itself.

When can you book your ticket?

Uses the 60-day advance booking window (journey day not counted) and the Tatkal opening times (10:00 AC, 11:00 non-AC, one day before). On the day booking opens, only Aadhaar-verified IRCTC users can book online between 08:00 and midnight. Check IRCTC if a rule changes.

Step 3: Use alternate boarding stations

You can book a train from any station on its route, not only the station where it starts. A different boarding point can sometimes show a shorter waiting list, so it is worth checking. For trips into Bihar, these are the stations worth comparing:

Patna JunctionPNBEA major stop with a long list of long-distance trainsMap
Rajendra Nagar TerminalRJPBThe Patna terminal for several Delhi-bound trainsMap
Darbhanga JunctionDBGThe start point of the Bihar Sampark Kranti
Samastipur JunctionSPJA busy junction in north Bihar, worth checking against the others

Changing your boarding point after booking follows its own rule. Only confirmed or RAC tickets can change it, once per ticket, up to 30 minutes before departure, and waitlisted tickets cannot change it at all. See our alternate boarding stations explainer for the details.

Step 4: Treat festival specials as a bonus

Festival specials are added as demand shows up. They often carry temporary numbers that start with 0, and they appear in booking and live status only after they are formally notified, which can be weeks or just days before they run. Search by route and name, not by a number you remember from last year.

Some Delhi and Bihar specials already in our timetable run daily, such as 02569 DBG NDLS Special from Darbhanga and 02564 NDLS BJU Special from New Delhi to Barauni. Open the train page and confirm the dates it is running in the Diwali period before you build a plan around one. Our special trains guide covers how to find them.

Step 5: Plan around the chart, not only the booking

A ticket can still move after you book it. The first reservation chart is prepared at least 10 hours before departure, so a waitlisted ticket can rise or fall until then. The second chart comes closer to the journey. Keep one backup train on the same route for the same day, not just the one you prefer.

Tip: compare three trains on the same day and one alternate boarding station before you pay. The trip planner shows seat availability and confirmation chances for each option side by side.

A week-by-week plan for Diwali travellers

    WhenWhat to do
Now, late OctoberBook the outbound and the return. Put the Tatkal opening time for each travel date in your calendar.
About a week beforeCheck whether any specials for your dates have been notified. Confirm the alternate station and the backup train.
The day before the journeyIf a leg is still waitlisted, Tatkal opens at 10:00 IST for AC classes and 11:00 IST for non-AC. Have the form ready.
On the dayCheck the chart status and live running status on the train page before you leave for the station.

    Budget for the unexpected

Festival travel costs more when plans change at the last minute. Tatkal fares are higher than the general fare, and a confirmed Tatkal ticket gets no refund if you cancel it. Keep the cancellation rules in mind before you choose between a confirmed ticket on an early train and a Tatkal seat on a later one. For a full breakdown of cancellation bands, see the Tatkal cancellation and refund rules.

Check the exact fare and the cancellation charges on IRCTC when you book, since these change.
