Ajanta and Ellora are two separate UNESCO World Heritage cave complexes, not one site, and treating them as a single quick stop is the most common planning mistake. Both are reached through Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (CPSN), formerly Aurangabad, which is well connected to Mumbai by train.

Which train from Mumbai reaches the gateway city fastest

Several options connect Mumbai CSMT to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar:

TrainCSMT departureCPSN arrivalDuration
NED Vande Bharat (20706)13:1518:435h 28m
Tapovan Express (17617)05:3013:057h 35m
Devagiri Express (17057)21:3004:15 (+1)6h 45m
Janshatabdi Express (12071)12:1018:256h 15m

The Vande Bharat is the fastest daytime option, useful if you want to arrive with the evening still ahead of you. The Devagiri Express runs overnight, which suits travellers who'd rather sleep through the journey and start sightseeing the next morning without losing a full day to transit.

Tip: the Tapovan Express's early morning departure from Mumbai works well if you want to reach Sambhajinagar by early afternoon and still fit in a first look at Ellora, which is much closer to the city than Ajanta, on the same day.

How to split time between the two cave complexes

Ellora, about 30 km from the city, is the more visitable of the two on a shorter trip since it's closer and has a wider mix of Buddhist, Hindu and Jain caves in one location, including the enormous rock-cut Kailasa Temple, carved from a single piece of rock and one of the most ambitious structures in India regardless of age. Half a day is workable here if you're pressed for time, though a full day lets you actually take in the scale of the site.

Seats left, before you book

Ajanta, about 100 km from the city and roughly two to two and a half hours by road each way, needs a dedicated day given the travel time alone. The caves here are older, famous for their Buddhist murals and paintings rather than large-scale rock-cut architecture, a genuinely different experience from Ellora rather than a lesser version of it. Because of the distance, doing Ajanta as an add-on to an already full Ellora day isn't realistic, treat it as its own day.

Ajanta is closed on Mondays and Ellora on Tuesdays. Plan your two days so neither site falls on its weekly closure day, since a Monday at Ajanta or a Tuesday at Ellora will leave you stuck. Confirm current hours and any seasonal changes with the Archaeological Survey of India before you travel.

Is this doable as a 2-day weekend or does it need 3?

A tight two-day weekend works if you take an early or overnight train in, dedicate one full day to Ajanta and use the other, shorter day for Ellora on your way back toward the station, since Ellora is close enough to the city to combine with a departure day. A three-day trip is more comfortable and lets you add the Daulatabad Fort, roughly midway between the city and Ellora, and the Bibi Ka Maqbara, a smaller echo of the Taj Mahal located within the city itself, without feeling rushed.

A realistic 2-day plan

  • Day 1: overnight train arriving early morning, drop bags, head straight to Ajanta for the full day given the distance, back to the city by evening.
  • Day 2: Ellora in the morning, Daulatabad Fort or Bibi Ka Maqbara if time allows, then head to the station for your return train.

What's the best return sequence back to Mumbai?

If you're catching an evening train back on day two, plan your Ellora and any extra sightseeing with a hard stop by mid-afternoon, road traffic and the drive back into the city from Ellora can eat more time than expected. The Vande Bharat's return working and the Devagiri and Tapovan Expresses' reverse schedules all connect back to Mumbai CSMT; pick whichever matches whether you'd rather travel by day or sleep through the return leg.

Getting to the caves from the city

Taxis and pre-arranged cars are the practical way to reach both Ajanta and Ellora, since public bus options exist but run less frequently and take longer. A full-day taxi hire, whether for Ajanta or for Ellora plus the nearby fort and tomb, is the standard approach most visitors take, and it's worth booking through your hotel or a reputable local operator rather than negotiating cold at the station.

Best time of year to visit

November through February brings the most comfortable temperatures for a day spent walking between cave interiors and open courtyards in the sun. Summer, April through June, gets very hot, and the caves themselves offer little shade or cooling relief since many are open-fronted or only partially enclosed.

Budget for the trip

Beyond the train fare, the largest cost is usually the taxi hire for Ajanta given the distance, typically higher than a half-day Ellora hire simply because of the extra fuel and driver time. Entry tickets to both cave complexes are charged separately and are inexpensive by international standards, with a differential rate for foreign visitors at both sites. Budget an extra buffer for water and food, since options directly at the cave sites are limited compared to what you'll find back in the city.

What to carry

Comfortable walking shoes matter more here than almost anywhere else on a typical India itinerary, both sites involve a fair amount of walking and some stairs, and at Ajanta specifically, a walk down into a horseshoe-shaped gorge to reach the caves themselves. Carry water, a hat and sunscreen, especially outside the cooler winter months, and a torch or phone light is useful for a closer look at some of the more dimly lit interiors.

Frequently asked questions

Which train from Mumbai reaches the Ajanta-Ellora gateway city fastest?

The NED Vande Bharat (20706) is the fastest daytime option at about 5 and a half hours. The Devagiri Express takes about 6 hours 45 minutes overnight, useful if you'd rather sleep through the journey.

How should I split time between the two cave complexes?

Ellora, about 30 km from the city, works well in half a day to a full day. Ajanta, about 100 km away, needs a dedicated full day given the travel time alone, it shouldn't be combined with Ellora on the same day.

Is this doable as a 2-day weekend or does it need 3 days?

A 2-day weekend works with an early or overnight train in, one full day for Ajanta and a shorter day for Ellora on your way back. A 3-day trip is more comfortable and allows time for Daulatabad Fort and Bibi Ka Maqbara too.

What's the best return sequence back to Mumbai?

Finish Ellora and any city sightseeing by mid-afternoon on your last day to leave buffer for the drive back before an evening train. Both daytime and overnight trains run the return leg, so pick based on whether you'd rather travel by day or sleep through it.
