Amrit Bharat vs Vande Bharat: Which Should You Book

Amrit Bharat is a long-distance, non-AC push-pull train with sleeper and general class. Vande Bharat is a shorter, all-AC chair car train. Here is how to pick.

These two get compared constantly because they are India's two flagship "new generation" trains, but they were never built to do the same job.

The core design difference

Vande Bharat is a self-propelled, all-AC train with chair car and executive chair car seating, built for speed on shorter to medium routes that can be covered in a single day. Amrit Bharat is a push-pull train, meaning it has locomotives at both ends for faster acceleration and smoother stops, but it runs standard LHB coaches in sleeper and general (unreserved) class, with no AC at all. It was designed to replace ageing rakes on long-distance routes that never got a premium upgrade, at a fare ordinary long-distance travellers can afford.

Which one is cheaper for the same route

Where both happen to serve a similar corridor, Amrit Bharat's sleeper and general fares sit well below Vande Bharat's chair car fares, since one is a reserved AC seat and the other is a standard non-AC long-distance fare structure. The two are rarely a true apples-to-apples comparison on the exact same route, since Amrit Bharat mostly runs on long overnight corridors Vande Bharat doesn't cover at all. Check the current fare on each train's own page for your specific route and class rather than assuming a fixed price gap.

Tip: if your trip is an overnight or multi-day haul and you don't need AC, Amrit Bharat's sleeper class is usually the better value than trying to force a Vande Bharat, which often does not even run on that route.

Does Amrit Bharat have sleeper berths where Vande Bharat doesn't

Yes, sleeper class is a core part of Amrit Bharat, alongside general unreserved coaches. The standard Vande Bharat has no sleeper option at all, only seated chair car classes, which is why it doesn't suit overnight travel well on longer routes. A separate sleeper version of Vande Bharat has since been introduced on a small number of routes, which is its own comparison worth reading up on if an AC sleeper, rather than a non-AC one, is what you're after.

Which one currently runs on more routes

Official figures put Vande Bharat well ahead: 164 Vande Bharat services had been introduced by December 2025, against 60 Amrit Bharat services running as of 18 March 2026. Vande Bharat launched first and has expanded faster, while Amrit Bharat has grown more gradually, concentrated on long-distance corridors linking smaller cities and pilgrimage or migrant-worker routes to major metros, such as Mumbai LTT to Saharsa (11015).

Don't assume either train serves your route. Despite the growing numbers, most city pairs in India still have neither. Check the specific train's page for your route before planning around one by name alone.

How to decide between them

  • Same-day trip, comfort matters: Vande Bharat, if it runs your route, such as Nagpur to Secunderabad (20101).
  • Overnight or multi-day trip, budget matters more than AC: Amrit Bharat, if it runs your route.
  • Overnight trip, AC sleeper wanted: neither; look at a Rajdhani, Duronto or a standard AC sleeper express instead.
  • Route has neither: a standard superfast or express train, checked for the class and comfort level you need.

What the coaches actually feel like

Vande Bharat's chair car seats are similar in spirit to a Shatabdi's, rotating for direction of travel on some rakes, with onboard announcements, reading lights and a optional catering you can choose while booking. It is built to feel closer to a flight cabin than a traditional Indian train, which is a large part of its appeal for business and short-leisure travel.

Amrit Bharat's sleeper and general coaches use the standard LHB shell most long-distance trains already run, but with upgraded interiors: better seat cushioning, improved lighting, mobile charging points at every berth, and CCTV, which is a real step up from the decades-old non-AC rakes it is gradually replacing. It is not trying to feel premium; it is trying to make the ordinary long-distance experience noticeably less rough, without adding AC or its cost to the fare.

Punctuality and reliability

Both are newer trains with modern braking and coupling, which generally helps punctuality compared with older rakes, but neither is immune to network-wide delays from congestion, weather or infrastructure work elsewhere on the line. A long-distance Amrit Bharat run of 30 or 40 hours has more opportunity to accumulate delay simply because it covers more ground and more junctions than a same-day Vande Bharat hop. Check live running status for your specific train rather than assuming either category is always on time, and build in a buffer if you have a tight connection at the far end of a long Amrit Bharat run.
