Bengaluru City vs Yesvantpur vs SMVT: Which Station

Bengaluru now runs three major stations, KSR City, Yesvantpur and SMVT. Here's which one your train actually uses and how far each is from the city centre.

Bengaluru effectively runs three major railway terminals now, and mixing them up is an easy way to miss a train in a city where road traffic can turn a short distance into a long delay. Here's which is which and when each one matters.

The three stations at a glance

SMVT BengaluruSMVBEast Bengaluru, Baiyappanahalli, off Old Madras RoadA newer terminal, growing share of long-distance and originating trains

Why did Bengaluru add a third major station

KSR Bengaluru City, the historic main terminal, has long operated well past comfortable capacity for a city of Bengaluru's size and growth. Yesvantpur was expanded some years ago to take pressure off it, and more recently SMVT Bengaluru (Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal) was built specifically as a large, modern terminal to keep adding capacity as the city's rail traffic keeps growing. It's the same pattern seen in Delhi and Mumbai: one city, several major stations, each absorbing part of the load the original terminal can no longer handle alone.

Tip: always check the three-letter station code on your ticket, not just "Bengaluru" or "Bangalore." SBC, YPR and SMVB serve different parts of the city and aren't always a quick transfer from each other.

How far is SMVT Bengaluru from the city centre

SMVT sits at Baiyappanahalli in the east of the city, off Old Madras Road, well away from the traditional city centre around Majestic. It suits you if you are staying in east Bengaluru, around Indiranagar or KR Puram, but if your hotel or business is in central Bengaluru, budget more time for the transfer than you would from KSR City station. It is not close to Kempegowda International Airport, which lies far to the north.

Which station for which direction

  • KSR Bengaluru City: still the default for the widest spread of routes and the most services overall, the safest assumption if you haven't checked your specific train.
  • Yesvantpur: a meaningful share of trains toward the west coast and other routes that were shifted here specifically to ease City station's load.
  • SMVT Bengaluru: an increasing number of newer and originating long-distance services, handy if you are staying in east Bengaluru.

There's no single clean rule mapping direction to station, the split has evolved route by route rather than along one consistent geographic logic, so the only reliable check is your specific train's origin or destination code.

Are these stations connected by metro

KSR Bengaluru City and Yesvantpur both have direct Namma Metro connectivity, making a transfer between them straightforward outside of very heavy traffic. SMVT Bengaluru is a short walk from Baiyappanahalli station on the Purple Line, so you can reach Majestic (for KSR City) by metro without a road transfer.

Don't cut a same-city transfer close. If your itinerary has you arriving at one Bengaluru station and departing from another, build in at least an hour, more during peak traffic, since road distances between these three can be significant even within city limits.

A brief history of the split

KSR Bengaluru City, still commonly called Bangalore City station by long-time residents, dates to the colonial era and has been the default terminal for as long as most travellers can remember. Yesvantpur grew from a secondary yard into a full terminal over the past couple of decades specifically to absorb overflow traffic. SMVT Bengaluru is the newest addition, developed as a large-scale modern terminal with the explicit goal of taking a substantial share of future growth off the older two stations, rather than remaining a minor stop.

What this means for a same-city connection

If your journey involves arriving at one Bengaluru station and departing from another, treat it the same way you would a transfer between two different Delhi or Mumbai terminals, as a genuine leg of your journey rather than an afterthought. Road traffic in Bengaluru is notoriously unpredictable at peak times, and what looks like a short distance on a map can take considerably longer during the morning or evening rush.

A quick rule of thumb

When in doubt and you have not yet checked your ticket, KSR Bengaluru City remains the single busiest and most centrally located of the three, and the safest default guess if you are meeting someone or arranging a pickup without the exact details in hand. But treat that only as a starting assumption, the only fully reliable answer for your own journey is the station code printed on your ticket or shown against your specific train.

Checking before you travel

The reliable way to avoid a wrong-station mix-up is to look up your specific train on its live status page, which shows the exact station code for both origin and destination, rather than assuming based on the route or the city name alone. Use the trip planner if you're comparing multiple trains on the same route, since two services to the same destination can depart from two different Bengaluru stations on the same day, sometimes just an hour or two apart on the timetable.
