New Jalpaiguri, always called NJP, is the busiest gateway to the entire Darjeeling-Sikkim hill circuit. Almost nobody stays in New Jalpaiguri itself; the station exists to hand you off to Darjeeling, Gangtok, Kalimpong or the Dooars, so its layout and facilities are built around that onward transfer.

Station layout and platforms

NJP handles heavy traffic from Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati and the rest of the North East on a single set of through platforms, so specific platform numbers for any train change with traffic on the day. The station has a reasonably wide concourse, waiting rooms, a cloak room, food stalls and a pharmacy, and is well signed for a station of its size. Don't rely on memory for which platform your train uses; check the display boards or your train's live NJP departure board as you arrive.

Tip: if you're arriving on an overnight train from Kolkata or Delhi and heading straight into the hills, keep your day bag accessible and your main luggage easy to grab, since NJP mornings are crowded with everyone doing the same onward transfer at once.

Getting from NJP to Darjeeling or Gangtok

DestinationApprox. distanceTypical road time
DarjeelingAbout 75-80 km3 to 3.5 hours by shared jeep or car
GangtokAbout 125 km4 to 4.5 hours by shared jeep or car
KalimpongAbout 75 km3 to 3.5 hours
Siliguri town centreAbout 5 km15-20 minutes

None of these hill destinations are reachable by train from NJP; the toy train to Darjeeling (DJ) is a separate narrow-gauge heritage line whose through trains from NJP take roughly 7.5 to 8.5 hours, so most visitors use it for a joyride rather than as a transfer, and Gangtok has no rail line at all. The road is the only realistic option for all three.

Where the prepaid shared-taxi stand is

NJP has a prepaid taxi and shared-jeep counter just outside the main station exit, where operators sell seats in shared Sumos and Boleros to Darjeeling, Gangtok, Kalimpong and other hill towns. Rates and departure times are posted at the counter, and vehicles generally leave once full rather than on a fixed schedule, so mornings see the most frequent departures. A private car booked in advance through your hotel is the alternative if you want to leave on your own schedule or are travelling with a larger group.

Book the first available jeep in the morning if you can. Hill roads to Darjeeling and Gangtok can take noticeably longer after midday due to traffic near Siliguri and Rangpo, and landslide-related delays are more likely if you're travelling in the monsoon months of June to September.

Is there a cloak room for luggage before a toy train ride

NJP has a cloak room (luggage office) where you can leave bags for a fee while you do a short toy train joyride or a same-day trip that doesn't need full luggage. This is useful if you're breaking your journey at NJP for a few hours rather than going straight up to the hills. Check current hours and rates at the counter, since these can change.

Which platform usually handles Delhi and Kolkata route trains

NJP does not assign fixed platforms by route; the same platform can serve a Delhi-bound Rajdhani in the morning and a Kolkata-bound express in the evening, depending on scheduling that day. Platforms for major long-distance trains, such as the Rajdhanis towards Delhi and the expresses towards Kolkata, are announced on the boards closer to arrival time. Always confirm on the departure board or your train's live status page rather than assuming a platform from a previous trip.

Facilities at a glance

  • Waiting rooms: available for both general and reserved-class passengers, useful if your onward jeep isn't leaving for a while.
  • Food: station stalls and a few sit-down options near the entrance; Siliguri town, 15-20 minutes away, has far more choice if you have time.
  • ATMs and a pharmacy: present near the main concourse.
  • Retiring rooms: bookable in advance for passengers with a valid onward or arriving ticket, useful for an overnight break before an early jeep.

Planning the transfer around your train's arrival time

Most long-distance trains into NJP from Delhi or Kolkata arrive in the morning, which lines up well with shared-jeep departures to the hills. If your train arrives late at night instead, it is usually more comfortable to book a retiring room or a nearby Siliguri hotel and make the hill transfer the next morning rather than negotiating a late-night jeep. Check your train's expected arrival on its live running status page a few hours out so you can time your onward booking with some confidence.

A typical first-day plan

  1. Arrive at NJP on a morning train from Kolkata or Delhi.
  2. Head straight to the prepaid shared-jeep counter outside the station.
  3. Book a seat to Darjeeling, Gangtok or Kalimpong; jeeps to Darjeeling and Kalimpong tend to fill fastest in the morning.
  4. Reach your hill destination by mid-to-late afternoon, with enough daylight left to settle in before evening.

The Darjeeling toy train, what it actually is today

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the UNESCO-listed toy train, runs on a separate narrow-gauge line from NJP up to Darjeeling town, but most travellers today use it for a short joyride segment, commonly Darjeeling to Ghum and back, rather than as transport from NJP itself. If riding the toy train is a priority, plan it as an activity once you've already reached Darjeeling by road, not as your method of getting there from NJP.

What to do if your train into NJP is delayed

A late-arriving train changes your onward jeep plans more than it might elsewhere, since shared jeeps to the hills thin out as the day goes on. If your train is running significantly behind schedule, check its live status a few hours out and consider messaging your hotel or a travel contact in advance so they know to expect a later arrival, or plan for an overnight stop near NJP or Siliguri rather than a late, tiring hill drive. The why trains run late guide explains what kind of delays are common on this corridor, especially in winter fog season further south on the route.
