Varanasi Junction (BSB), commonly called Varanasi Cantt, is the city's main railhead and the arrival point for the great majority of long-distance trains, carrying one of the highest volumes of pilgrim and heritage tourist traffic of any station in India.

How far is Varanasi Junction from the main ghats?

The ghats, the long stretch of stone steps along the Ganges where most visitors spend their time, are about 5-6 km from the station, roughly 15-25 minutes by auto or taxi depending on traffic and which specific ghat you're heading to. Dashashwamedh Ghat, the busiest and most central, and Assi Ghat, further south and popular for a quieter morning, are both within this rough range from the station.

Tip: the roads nearest the ghats themselves are narrow and often closed to larger vehicles, so the last stretch of any trip is usually on foot or by cycle-rickshaw regardless of how you travel the rest of the way.

Where is the prepaid auto stand located?

A prepaid auto and taxi counter operates outside the main station building, the straightforward way to fix a fare before heading into the city, particularly useful for a first-time visitor unfamiliar with typical local rates. Ride-hailing apps also operate in Varanasi, though for the final approach to the ghats themselves, an auto or cycle-rickshaw is often more practical than a car given the narrow lanes.

Is Varanasi City a better station to use for some trips?

Varanasi City (BCY) is a smaller station, and depending on where you're headed in the old city, it can be closer to some of the northern ghats and the old city lanes than Varanasi Junction. Not every long-distance train stops here though, since Varanasi Junction handles the bulk of major services. Check whether your specific train calls at Varanasi City before assuming you can use it; if it does and your destination in the city is on that side, it can save some of the road transfer time.

Is there a retiring room available for an early morning arrival?

Yes, Varanasi Junction has retiring rooms available to passengers with a valid ticket, useful for pilgrims and travellers arriving very early who want a few hours' rest before heading out for the classic sunrise boat ride on the Ganges. Availability isn't guaranteed and is handled at the station's retiring room booking counter, so it's worth checking as soon as you arrive rather than assuming a room will be free later in the day.

Early morning boat rides sell out fast in peak pilgrimage season (particularly around major festivals and the winter months). If a sunrise Ganges boat ride is central to your plan, arrange it the evening before rather than trying to book on arrival that same morning.

A same-day plan for a long layover

With several hours between trains, the ghats are the obvious priority: a walk along Dashashwamedh and the surrounding ghats, and if timing allows, the Ganga Aarti ceremony held every evening at Dashashwamedh Ghat, one of the city's signature experiences. Kashi Vishwanath Temple, a short walk from the ghats through the old city lanes, is another common stop, though expect security checks and, at times, long queues given its significance. Phones and bags face restrictions inside the temple complex, so travel light or be ready to leave items in a locker nearby.

Station facilities beyond the basics

Varanasi Junction has waiting rooms, food stalls covering both local and standard station fare, and an enquiry counter that can help with platform and retiring room questions on arrival. Given the volume of pilgrim traffic through this station, it's also generally well staffed and signposted for first-time visitors, though it can get genuinely crowded during major festivals, so allow extra time to navigate the platforms with luggage.

Beyond the ghats

If you have more than a few hours, Sarnath, where the Buddha is said to have given his first sermon, is about 10 km from the station and makes a good half-day addition for anyone interested in Buddhist history, with excavated stupas and an ASI museum on site (the museum is closed on Fridays). It is a separate trip from the ghats and old city, so factor in the extra travel time if you are trying to fit both into one layover, since Sarnath alone with the museum can take two to three hours including the return drive.

Checking your train before you arrive

Long-distance trains into Varanasi, especially overnight services from Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai, can run behind schedule on the final stretch. Check the live running status before locking in an early sunrise boat booking or a tight onward connection, since even a modest delay changes how much of the morning you'll actually have on the ghats. Our trip planner is also useful for onward journeys from Varanasi, showing live seat availability across multiple trains at once.
