Jammu Tawi (JAT) is where most journeys into Jammu and Kashmir by rail actually begin, whether the destination is the Vaishno Devi shrine or Srinagar. It is a large, busy station, and the single most common confusion among first-time visitors is thinking Jammu Tawi itself is close to Katra. It is not: Katra is a separate station further up the line, and you need to travel there by train or road, not step outside and hail a cab.

Getting from Jammu Tawi to Katra for Vaishno Devi

The base camp for the Vaishno Devi trek is at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK), roughly 45 km from Jammu Tawi by road. Several trains run this short hop daily, taking under two hours, including Vande Bharat services that are worth booking ahead in pilgrimage season. If your onward train has a comfortable gap, taking the train to Katra is usually smoother than a road taxi through Jammu's city traffic, especially during the autumn and summer pilgrimage rush.

Tip: if you land or arrive at Jammu Tawi late at night with an early-morning Katra train, a retiring room at the station is often more practical than a hotel booking, especially for a short layover.

Catching the Vande Bharat to Srinagar

The Vande Bharat Express (26401) runs from Jammu Tawi through to Srinagar, covering one of the most scenic and engineering-heavy stretches of Indian Railways, through the Pir Panjal tunnel near Banihal and over the Chenab bridge. It runs six days a week (not on Tuesdays), and a second Vande Bharat, the 26403, leaves Jammu Tawi in the early afternoon six days a week (not on Wednesdays). Both are high-demand services and seats sell out well ahead of the date, particularly in the summer tourist season.

Platforms and where things are

Jammu Tawi is a multi-platform station with a large concourse. Many trains start or end here, while many long-distance trains continue up the line to Katra, and the Vande Bharat services to Srinagar start here. Foot overbridges connect the platforms, and there are digital and manual boards showing the next platform allotment. Because platform allocation for a given train can shift closer to departure, especially at a big station like this, it's worth checking your train's live status page shortly before you head to the platform rather than relying on a number printed on an old ticket.

The prepaid taxi stand

A prepaid auto and taxi counter operates just outside the main station building, with fixed fares posted for common destinations in Jammu city and onward points. This is the safer option over the touts who approach arriving passengers directly, especially at night. For Katra specifically, most pilgrims still prefer the train given the road traffic through Jammu, but a shared taxi is a fallback if you've missed the last convenient rail connection.

Beware of unofficial "through package" touts near the exit offering a taxi straight to Katra or even to the Vaishno Devi base camp gate for an inflated price. Stick to the prepaid counter, or take the train, which is both cheaper and faster than the road route in daytime traffic.

Retiring rooms and an overnight layover

Jammu Tawi has retiring rooms of a few categories, bookable by any passenger holding a valid onward or already-completed journey ticket, usually through the railway's retiring room booking system or at the station enquiry counter. These are meant for short layovers rather than multi-night stays, and they get booked up quickly around the peak Vaishno Devi season (roughly March to October) and the Amarnath Yatra window, so it is worth checking availability as soon as your travel dates are fixed rather than assuming a room will be free on arrival.

Planning the connection either way

If Vaishno Devi is the goal, plan your Jammu Tawi arrival with enough buffer before your Katra train, since delays on long-distance routes into Jammu are common, particularly in winter fog season further down the line. If Srinagar and the valley are the destination, book the Vande Bharat well ahead and keep an eye on the weather; heavy snow can occasionally affect the schedule on this route in winter, and the train's own status page is the fastest way to check before you leave for the station.

Food and last-minute shopping

Jammu Tawi has the usual station food stalls and a few sit-down options in the concourse area, plus vendors on the platforms once your train is announced. If you're heading up to Katra or Srinagar with a long day ahead and no pantry car on your specific train, it's worth picking up water and snacks here rather than counting on stops along the way, since not every halt on the hill sections has a long enough stop for shopping.

Security and general advice

As a major station in a security-sensitive region, Jammu Tawi has visible RPF, GRP and police presence, baggage screening at entry points, and periodic identity checks, especially in the run-up to the Vaishno Devi season and around the Amarnath Yatra. Carry a physical or digital copy of your ID and ticket at all times inside the station, not just in your phone's downloads folder in case connectivity is patchy. None of this should slow down a routine journey, but it does mean arriving with a little extra buffer time compared with a smaller station is sensible, particularly during peak pilgrimage months.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Jammu Tawi to Katra for Vaishno Devi?

By train, not by stepping outside the station. Katra (SVDK) is a separate station about 45 to 50 km away by road (the rail line via Udhampur is longer), reached in under two hours on one of the several daily trains, or by road taxi if you prefer, though the train is usually faster given Jammu's city traffic.

Where is the prepaid taxi stand located?

Just outside the main entrance of Jammu Tawi station, with fixed posted fares for Jammu city and nearby destinations. Use it instead of touts who approach you directly on the concourse or outside the gates.

Is there a retiring room for an overnight layover?

Yes, Jammu Tawi has retiring rooms bookable through the railway system or the station enquiry counter. They fill up fast in the Vaishno Devi and Amarnath Yatra seasons, so book as soon as your dates are set.

Which platform usually handles the Vande Bharat to Srinagar?

Platform allotment for a specific service can change closer to departure at a large station like Jammu Tawi, so check the live running status page for the day's platform just before you head there rather than relying on a fixed number.
