Kashmir by Vande Bharat: A Trip Itinerary

The Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat cuts the trip to under five hours over the Chenab and Anji Khad bridges. A day-by-day itinerary built around this new train.

The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link finally gave Kashmir a direct train from the plains, and the Vande Bharat that runs on it is the fastest way to make the trip. What used to be a full day on the highway, weather permitting, is now under five hours by rail.

What the journey time actually is now

The Vande Bharat Express (26401) leaves Jammu Tawi at 06:20 and reaches Srinagar at 11:10, a run of about 4 hours 50 minutes over 267 km. It calls at Udhampur, Katra (for Vaishno Devi), Reasi and Banihal along the way, so you can also join or leave the train at Katra if that suits your plan better than starting from Jammu.

StationArrivalDepartureDistance from Jammu
Jammu Tawi-06:200 km
Udhampur (MCTM)07:3907:4153 km
Katra (SVDK)08:0508:1078 km
Reasi08:2808:3096 km
Banihal09:5609:58189 km
Srinagar11:10-267 km
Tip: the return working, train 26402, runs the same route in the opposite direction, leaving Srinagar at 14:00 and reaching Jammu Tawi at 18:50, so a same-day or next-day round trip is realistic if you only have the weekend.

Scenic highlights on this specific route

This is not a train ride to sleep through. Between Katra and Banihal the line crosses two of the more talked-about pieces of Indian railway engineering of the last decade: the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, standing well above the river gorge, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. You are on each bridge for only a minute or two, so be at the window before the train reaches them.

Seats left, before you book

After Banihal the train threads through the Pir Panjal range on a long tunnel stretch before the line opens out into the Kashmir valley, and the last approach into Srinagar runs past open farmland and poplar-lined fields rather than another mountain wall. A window seat on either side is worth having for this section; the gorge views favour one side near the bridges and the valley views favour the other closer to Srinagar.

How many days a Kashmir trip built around this train should take

Five to six days is the realistic minimum if the train ride itself is meant to be an experience and not just a transfer. A tighter four-day version works if you are comfortable cutting Srinagar sightseeing to the essentials and skipping Gulmarg or Pahalgam.

A sample five to six day itinerary

Day 1: Jammu or Katra. Fly or take a long-distance train into Jammu Tawi. If your dates line up with Vaishno Devi too, base yourself in Katra instead and join the Vande Bharat there the next morning.

Day 2: The Vande Bharat to Srinagar. Take the early train, watch the Chenab and Anji Khad bridges go by, and reach Srinagar by late morning with most of the day still ahead. Check in near Dal Lake and take an evening shikara ride.

Day 3: Srinagar city. Mughal gardens (Nishat, Shalimar, Chashme Shahi), the old city and Hazratbal shrine on the lake. A houseboat night is worth booking if your schedule allows it.

Day 4: Gulmarg. A day trip by road, roughly two hours each way, for the gondola and the meadow views. Skiing season adds crowds and cold; the rest of the year it is a quieter, easier day out.

Day 5: Pahalgam. Another day trip by road, around two and a half hours, for the Lidder river valley and Betaab valley. If short on time, pick one of Gulmarg or Pahalgam rather than rushing both.

Day 6: Return. Take the Vande Bharat back to Jammu, or Katra if you are continuing the pilgrimage leg, and connect onward from there.

Is this route affected by winter weather closures

The whole point of the rail link was to give Kashmir a route into the valley that does not shut down the way the Jammu-Srinagar highway does under snow and landslides, since most of the line runs through tunnels and on elevated bridges rather than an exposed mountain road. That said, heavy snow or extreme weather can still affect any transport link in the region, including trains, so check the live running status of your specific train close to your travel date rather than assuming it is immune to winter disruption.

Book Gulmarg and Pahalgam cars in advance in peak season. Snowfall weekends and the summer school holidays both bring a surge of road traffic out of Srinagar, and taxis get scarce if you try to arrange one the same morning.

Before you lock in dates, check the live status and timetable for 26401, and use the trip planner if you are connecting from a city further south into Jammu Tawi first.

Getting to Jammu, and booking around this train

Most visitors reach Jammu Tawi by an overnight train from Delhi, such as the Jammu Rajdhani, or by air into Jammu airport. There are two Vande Bharat pairs on this route (26401/26402 and the afternoon 26403/26404), and neither runs every day of the week, so check the running days on the train page first. Build your Jammu or Katra arrival the evening before rather than cutting it fine on the morning of departure. Seats are chair car and executive chair car only, so there is no sleeper option on this leg, and that is one more reason to treat it as a comfortable half-day journey rather than an overnight one.

On the ground in Srinagar, houseboats and hotels both cluster around Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake, and pre-booking matters more in the April to June and September to October peaks, when both leisure travellers and pilgrims heading onward add to demand. A local travel desk or your houseboat owner can usually arrange the Gulmarg and Pahalgam day trips with a shared or private cab, which works out cheaper than a solo taxi for a single traveller.

Fares and exact seat classes can change; check the current fare and seat map on the train's own page before you book.
