Platform Ticket Price and Rules 2026
How platform ticket pricing works, how long it's valid, why UTS no longer works for buying one, and why prices can rise during festivals and melas.

A platform ticket lets anyone onto the platform without boarding a train, for seeing someone off, picking someone up, or just helping carry luggage to the right coach. The price and the exact rules are set locally, so here's how to check what applies at your station right now.
How much does a platform ticket cost today
Platform ticket prices are set and periodically revised by each railway zone, not a single fixed number nationwide, so the exact price varies a little by station and can change over time. As a general rule, it is priced modestly, meant to be an easy, low-cost way to access the platform, not a real barrier. Zones do temporarily raise the price during specific high-crowd periods, like a major festival or a mela, as a crowd-control measure to discourage casual platform access when a station is already overloaded. Check the current price at your station's ticket counter, the RailOne app, or your zonal railway's official website before you go, rather than relying on a number from an old article.
How long is a platform ticket valid for
A platform ticket is valid for a short, limited window from the time of issue, meant to cover a typical drop-off, pickup or send-off visit rather than an extended stay on the platform. It is not meant to be used for a full day at the station or as a substitute for a journey ticket. If your visit is likely to run long, for example waiting through a significantly delayed train, check with station staff about your options rather than assuming your original platform ticket covers an open-ended stay.

| Where to buy it? | Station counter, and via the RailOne app where available |
Can I buy a platform ticket on the UTS app
No, not anymore. The UTS app was discontinued on 1 March 2026. Unreserved journey tickets, platform tickets and season tickets are now booked through the RailOne app, the newer CRIS platform that also handles reserved ticket booking. If you're used to UTS for a quick platform ticket, switch to RailOne, since UTS itself no longer works for this.
Do platform ticket prices rise during rush periods or festivals
Yes, this is a genuine and fairly common practice. During major festivals, large melas, or any event expected to bring unusually heavy crowds to a station, the zonal railway can temporarily raise the platform ticket price specifically to discourage non-essential platform access and keep crowd density manageable for safety. These hikes are usually announced ahead of the event and are temporary, reverting to the normal price once the crowd period passes. If you're heading to a station during a known high-traffic period, like Kumbh Mela season or a major festival, check current pricing rather than assuming the usual rate applies.
Do I actually need a platform ticket
Yes, if you're entering the platform area without a valid journey ticket, reservation, or season ticket for that day. This applies whether you're dropping someone off at their seat, picking someone up, or simply seeing someone board. Staff and RPF personnel do check for this, particularly at busier stations, and travelling without either a journey ticket or a platform ticket can be treated as a ticketless-travel issue if you're found on the platform without one.

- Buy it before you enter, at the counter or via RailOne, rather than assuming you can sort it out once you're already on the platform.
- Keep it until you leave, since staff can ask to see it at any point while you're on platform premises.
- Check the current price if it's been a while since you last bought one, especially around a festival period.
- Don't rely on the old UTS app; use RailOne for platform, unreserved and season ticket bookings now.
Using our live boards instead of a platform trip when you can
If you just want to check whether someone's train has arrived, or how late it's running, before heading to the station, our live running status and station live boards let you track that from your phone, which can save an unnecessary platform ticket and a wait on a crowded platform altogether. It's a useful check before deciding whether you actually need to be there in person for a pickup or send-off.
If you do head to the station, check the station live board for the platform your train is expected on, and see our guide to reading station boards if you're unsure how to find it once you're inside, so your platform ticket visit is timed well rather than spent waiting around on the wrong platform.
When can you book your ticket?
Uses the 60-day advance booking window (journey day not counted) and the Tatkal opening times (10:00 AC, 11:00 non-AC, one day before). On the day booking opens, only Aadhaar-verified IRCTC users can book online between 08:00 and midnight. Check IRCTC if a rule changes.
