Best Places to Visit Near Munnar Railway Station
Munnar has no station of its own; here's how to reach it from Ernakulam, real road distances to the tea gardens and viewpoints, and how many days to allow.

Munnar sits high in Kerala's Western Ghats, and there is no railway line running up into the hills, so every visitor arrives by road from a railhead down on the plains. That changes how this trip should be planned compared with a destination that has its own station.
Getting to Munnar from the nearest station
Ernakulam Junction (ERS) in Kochi is the most practical railhead, with the drive up to Munnar taking about four to four and a half hours depending on traffic through the ghat road. It's a long enough transfer that treating it as a same-day round trip from the station isn't realistic; this is a hill-station trip that needs an overnight stay at minimum, ideally two nights or more.
| Place | Distance from Munnar town | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Eravikulam National Park | About 15 km | 30-40 min |
| Mattupetty Dam | About 13 km | 30 min |
| Tea Museum | About 2 km | 10 min |
| Top Station viewpoint | About 32 km | 1-1.5 hours |
What to see once you're there
Eravikulam National Park, home to the endangered Nilgiri tahr, is Munnar's best-known nature stop and requires an entry permit with a shuttle bus into the core viewing area, so plan for some time in a queue during peak season. The park also closes every year for the Nilgiri tahr calving season, usually from February into March or early April, so check the Kerala Forest Department's dates if you are travelling then. Mattupetty Dam and the nearby Kundala Lake are popular for the view and a boat ride on the reservoir. The Tea Museum, close to the town centre, is a good half-day stop if you want context on the region's colonial-era tea industry before or after visiting an actual working plantation.
How many days should this realistically take?
Counting the road transfer both ways, a minimum of three days total works: one day for the drive up and initial settling in, one full day for Eravikulam, Mattupetty and the tea gardens, and a return day. Two full days in Munnar itself, rather than one, makes a real difference given how much of the first and last day gets consumed by the road journey.
Best time of year
September to May generally works well, avoiding the heaviest of the June-to-August monsoon when landslide risk on the ghat roads is at its highest and some viewpoints can be shrouded in cloud for days at a stretch. December to February is coolest, with the tea garden landscape at its greenest right after the monsoon eases in September and October.
Food to try
Munnar's estates and small local restaurants serve a mix of standard Kerala food and simpler hill-station fare, and a hot cup of estate-grown tea, sometimes with a view over the plantation it came from, is one of the more understated pleasures of a stay here. Spice plantations in the area also offer tastings and small shops if you want to bring home cardamom, pepper or cinnamon grown locally.
Getting around Munnar itself
Once you're in Munnar, the sights are spread across the surrounding hills rather than clustered in the town, so a full-day taxi or a rented self-drive vehicle is the practical way to cover Eravikulam, Mattupetty and Top Station in a reasonable amount of time. Public transport exists but is far less convenient given the distances and infrequent schedules on these hill routes.
Combining Munnar with Kochi
Since both share Ernakulam as the practical gateway, many travellers combine a Kochi city stop with the Munnar hill trip, either flying or taking the train into Kochi first, spending a day in Fort Kochi, then heading up to Munnar for the rest of the trip. See our guide on things to do in Kochi near the station if you're planning to split time between the two.
Where to stay in Munnar
Accommodation ranges from budget homestays to resort-style properties spread across the tea estate landscape, many with their own views over the plantations. Staying a little outside the immediate town centre, closer to the estates, often means a quieter setting and better views, at the cost of a slightly longer drive back into town for meals or shopping.
What to pack
Munnar's elevation makes it noticeably cooler than the Kerala coast, especially in the early morning and evening, so a light jacket or sweater is worth packing even outside the coolest months. Comfortable shoes matter too, since several of the viewpoints and the Eravikulam park trail involve some walking on uneven ground.
Which trains connect most easily to Ernakulam
Ernakulam Junction has strong connections across Kerala and to major cities further afield, making it a sensible base for the final leg into Munnar by road. Check your train's live running status before locking in an early road departure the same day you arrive, since a delayed overnight train can cost you the whole morning and push your Munnar arrival well into the evening. Our trip planner also helps if you're weighing an overnight train into Ernakulam against a daytime one for a fresher start on the drive up.
