This week's delay data: methodology

These figures come from TrainLiveStatus's own delay tracking across 6,344 trains in scope during the week of 27 September to 3 October 2026. We record the largest delay reported for each train during each day's run, then rank 3,624 of those trains by their average maximum daily delay. The day counts below are days with a record in our data, and many trains were seen on only 3 days, so treat the ranking as a snapshot, not a verdict. On time means the train arrived within 15 minutes of its scheduled time.

This is our internal tracking, not an official railway statistic. It shows delay patterns from live running status reports, not from a fixed sampling method or official delay declarations,

The 15 most delayed trains

The six trains that averaged more than 8 hours are described in detail; the other nine are listed after them. Running days are from our timetable data.

1. Purbanchal Express (15047): Kolkatta Terminal to Gorakhpur Jn, Mail/Express, 860 km. Running days: Mon, Tue, Thu, Sat. Our data has 3 observed days and also records 3 cancelled days, so the delay figures below come from a small sample. Average maximum delay: 623 minutes (10 hours 23 minutes). Worst single day: 717 minutes (11 hours 57 minutes). None of the observed runs was within 15 minutes.

2. RXL TPTY Express (17434): Raxaul Jn to Tirupati, Mail/Express, 2,801 km. Runs on Thursdays. Observed on 3 days. Average maximum delay: 574 minutes (9 hours 34 minutes). Worst single day: 716 minutes (11 hours 56 minutes). Partially recovered about 12 minutes per run on average.

How to use this

A train that averaged 8 hours or more over a week may be late repeatedly, but our data cannot tell you why, and a small number of observed days can mislead. For help with live updates, see our delay alerts post and why apps show different delay.

If you're booked on one of these trains

Check live running status for your specific journey date. One week's average does not predict a single trip. Use our trip planner to compare other trains on the same route, including seat availability and confirmation chances, and check each one's delay history on its train page. If you must stay with a delayed train, our guide on planning a pickup for a delayed train walks through how to set a safe leave-by time when delays are unpredictable.

Can I claim compensation for these delays

Rules on refunds or compensation for late trains are set by Indian Railways and can change, so check the official IRCTC and Indian Railways pages for the current position. If you need proof of a delay, for example for an insurance claim, our guide on a delay certificate explains the options. Our delay history is not an official record.

The bigger picture

Across the trains in our data this week, 41% ran within 15 minutes of schedule, and the average maximum daily delay was 45 minutes. That is far below the trains above, but an average hides a wide spread, so check live status before relying on a tight connection.

Frequently asked questions

Are these trains always this late?

These figures are from one week, and many trains were seen on only 3 days. A train that averages 8+ hours over a week may often be late, but any specific journey could be better or worse. Check live running status for your date.

What counts as on time?

Within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. None of the 15 trains listed had a run within that limit in our data this week.

How is delay measured in this data?

We record the largest delay reported during each train's run on each day, then average those daily maximums. It is different from averaging all intermediate stops, so a train with small delays at most stops but one huge delay at the end will show the large figure.

Can I get alerts for when a train I'm booking is late?

Yes. Train pages offer arrival alerts, so you can get a notification as the train nears your station, based on its live running status.
