What we measured and how

This report uses only TrainLiveStatus's own delay tracking for the seven days from 12 to 18 October 2026. For each train we record the largest delay reported during that day's run. A train counts as on time when that largest delay is within 15 minutes.

This is our own tracking, not an official Indian Railways statistic. Of 6,610 trains in scope, 4,161 were ranked. Across the window, the average largest daily delay was 55 minutes, and 37% of trains were on time on the day, as we count it. The window ends on the publishing day, so that last day may be only partly recorded.

The 15 most delayed trains

Trains are ranked by their average largest daily delay. None of these 15 trains was on time on any day it was observed in our records. The table uses our delay records only.

Patterns in the list

Azad HIND Express appears twice, once from Howrah Junction (HWH) to Pune Junction (PUNE) and once back. Both directions average more than eight hours of largest delay, and both were observed on all seven days.

Six of the 15 are special trains, and five of those six were seen on only three days. The exception is Hwh-ndls Special (04051), which our records show on all seven days. Its timetable lists running on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, so the seven observed days do not match its timetable. Most of the other special and weekly trains on the list also have a timetable with only one running day, for example 14122, 12161 and 12870 on Friday, yet we hold three days of reports for each. We cannot say from this data why the counts differ. Check the running days on the train page before you plan around it.

Our records also mark four cancelled days for Chattisgarh Express (18237) in this window. Read its figures with that in mind, since only three days are observed.

What the numbers do and do not show

Many trains on the list have only three observed days, so one bad run can move the average a lot. The median helps check the average. For Hwh-ndls Special (04051), the median is 8 h 21 min against an average of 9 h 07 min, so a few very late days lift the average.

The ranking is a snapshot of one week of reports. It is not a forecast for next week, and it does not say why a train was late.

Note: the figures come from running status reports that we collect. They can differ from what NTES or a railway zone shows for the same train on the same day. A train that was late at one station may have made up time later.

How to use this before you travel

  • Check the running days first. A delay on one day says little about the others, and the observed days may not match the timetable.
  • Look at the live status on the day. Each train page shows the current running status and the recent delay history for that train.
  • Plan a buffer for connections. If you need to change trains, allow extra time or pick a different train on the same route.
  • Compare alternatives. The trip planner shows other trains between the same stations, so you can choose a faster or more punctual option.

For earlier weeks, see the most delayed trains from 11 to 17 October 2026, 4 to 10 October and 27 September to 3 October. For the punctual side, read the most punctual long-distance trains from 3 to 9 October.

Frequently asked questions

How is the most delayed train ranked?

We record the largest delay reported for each train during each day's run, then rank trains by the average of those daily figures. A train counts as on time on a day when its largest delay is within 15 minutes.

Is this an official Indian Railways figure?

No. It comes from TrainLiveStatus's own delay tracking, built from running status reports. Railway zones publish their own figures, which can differ.

Why do most trains on the list have only three observed days?

Our records for this window hold three days of reports for most of the trains on the list. Averages based on three days can move a lot if one run is unusually late, so check the median and the live status page too.

Why does the Howrah to New Delhi Special show seven days when its timetable lists three running days?

Our records show seven observed days for train 04051 in this window, while its timetable lists Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Our observed days come from the reports we collected, so they do not always match the timetable. Check the train page for the running days before you travel.
