What we measured and how

This report uses only TrainLiveStatus's own delay tracking for the 25 days from 25 September to 19 October 2026. For each train and each day we record the largest delay reported during that day's run. A train counts as on time on a day when that largest delay is within 15 minutes of its schedule.

This is our own tracking, not an official Indian Railways statistic. Of 7,244 trains in scope, 6,319 were ranked. Across the ranked trains, the average largest daily delay was 52 minutes, and 40% of train-days were on time.

The 15 most delayed trains

None of these 15 trains was on time on any day in our sample. Their average largest daily delay ranged from 7 hours 29 minutes to 10 hours 22 minutes. The table gives the average, the median and the worst day for each train, with a link to its live status and delay history.

What the list has in common

Seven of the 15 carry a special-train type label in our database, such as Puja, TOD or SF special. The other eight are regular superfast, express, Amrit Bharat or Duronto services. Fourteen of the 15 have one end in Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Tripura, the north-east or Uttar Pradesh, such as at Howrah Junction, Kamakhya, Danapur and Raxaul. Korba to Yesvantpur (12252) is the exception.

A route list does not explain why a train ran late. Our data records the delay, not its cause, so we offer no cause for any train here.

The most punctual trains

All 15 of the most punctual trains in the ranking are suburban services in Chennai. Each averaged a largest daily delay of 5 minutes, was on time on every day in our sample, and had a worst day of 10 minutes or less. Twelve of them are MRTS trains between ST Thomas Mount and Chennai Beach, a route of 24 km.

These are short urban services, so compare them with each other, not with long-distance trains.

How to use this before you travel

  • Read the train's recent delay history on its page before you plan a connection that depends on it.
  • If a connection depends on a train near the top of the list, allow many hours of slack or pick another train on the same route in the trip planner.
  • Turn on the arrival alert on the train page for a push notification before your station.

What these numbers do not show

The window covers 25 days, so these figures describe this period only. For the weekly lists before it, see the 27 September to 3 October list and the 12 to 18 October list. For why two apps can show different delays for the same train, read why apps show different delays for the same train.

Frequently asked questions

How is the most delayed train ranked?

For each train we record the largest delay reported during each day's run, then rank trains by the average of those daily figures. A train with only a few days in the window can move up or down the list quickly, so read the ranking as a snapshot.

Is this an official Indian Railways figure?

No. It comes from TrainLiveStatus's own delay tracking, built from running status reports. Railway zones publish their own punctuality figures, which can differ from ours.

What does on time mean in this report?

A train counts as on time on a day when the largest delay reported during that day's run is within 15 minutes of schedule. A train can be on time on one day and very late on the next, so the on-time share and the average tell you different things.

Why do the suburban trains look so punctual?

They are short services of 21 to 60 km, so their largest daily delay is small in absolute terms. Compare like with like: suburban trains with suburban trains, and long-distance trains with other long-distance trains.
