Things to Do in Darjeeling After You Get Off the Train
NJP is the railhead, about 70 km from Darjeeling town. What the toy train actually covers, real distances to Tiger Hill and the tea gardens, and the best season.

Most trains from the rest of India end at New Jalpaiguri (NJP), down on the plains, not in Darjeeling itself. Darjeeling does have its own small station, but it's served only by the narrow-gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, the famous "toy train", and most travellers cover the climb by road rather than by rail. Knowing this before you book saves the surprise of assuming you can step off a mainline train directly into the hill town.

Getting from NJP up to Darjeeling
Shared jeeps (Sumo services) and taxis run from just outside NJP station and from nearby Siliguri, covering the roughly 70 km climb in about three hours depending on traffic and road conditions. The full toy train journey between NJP and Darjeeling exists too, but at seven to eight hours for the same distance, it's a scenic experience in its own right rather than a practical way to get there quickly, and most people save it for the shorter joyride sections once they're already in the hills.
The toy train joyride, once you're in Darjeeling
Rather than the full NJP run, most visitors take the short joyride between Darjeeling and Ghum, the highest railway station in India, which passes the famous Batasia Loop where the track spirals around a war memorial with mountain views. This is a two-hour round trip that fits easily into a single morning or afternoon once you're based in town, and is the more realistic way to experience the UNESCO-listed line without giving up most of a day.
What's close together in Darjeeling town
| Place | From Darjeeling town centre | Time needed |
|---|---|---|
| Chowrasta and Mall Road | Central, walkable | 1 to 2 h |
| Batasia Loop | About 5 km, on the way to Ghum | 30 to 45 min |
| Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and zoo | About 3 km | 1.5 to 2 h |
| Happy Valley Tea Estate | About 3 km | 1 to 1.5 h |

Chowrasta, the pedestrian square at the top of Mall Road, is the natural centre of gravity for an evening stroll, with cafes and shops around it and pony rides for kids. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, founded with Tenzing Norgay's involvement, has genuinely interesting exhibits on the history of Everest expeditions, and shares its grounds with the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, one of the few places to see red pandas and snow leopards.

Tiger Hill: the early sunrise trip
Tiger Hill, about 11 km from town, is the well-known spot for watching sunrise light up Kangchenjunga, and on a very clear day, a distant view of Everest. It means leaving before dawn, typically around 4 am, and shared jeeps organise this run daily from Darjeeling; the payoff depends entirely on the weather, since cloud cover is common and can block the view with no warning. Locals generally suggest asking your hotel about visibility conditions the evening before rather than booking blind.

Tea gardens and a slower afternoon
Beyond Happy Valley close to town, larger estates further out offer a more spread-out, walkable experience among the tea bushes, usually with a tasting session included. If you have a full extra day, combining a tea estate visit with a slow walk through the town's older colonial-era buildings is a good change of pace from the early starts that Tiger Hill and the toy train both demand.
When to go
October to December has the clearest mountain views and comfortable daytime temperatures, and March to May brings blooming rhododendrons along with generally good visibility. The monsoon months, roughly June to September, bring heavy rain, landslide risk on the hill roads, and mountain views that are often clouded over for days at a time, so it's the least reliable season for a first visit focused on the views.
Where to stay
Staying close to Chowrasta and the upper Mall Road area keeps everything walkable and puts you within easy reach of the jeep stand for the Tiger Hill sunrise run. Rooms with a mountain-facing view cost more and are worth asking about specifically when booking, since not every room in even a well-reviewed hotel actually faces Kangchenjunga. Book ahead for the October to December season, when Darjeeling's limited hotel stock fills up quickly with both domestic and international visitors.
Food worth trying
Darjeeling's Tibetan and Nepali influences show up clearly in the food, with momos and thukpa (a noodle soup) widely available and genuinely good, alongside Bengali and general Indian options around Mall Road. A cup of first-flush Darjeeling tea, ideally from a shop that can tell you which estate and flush it's from, is worth seeking out over the generic tea served at most casual restaurants.
Getting to New Jalpaiguri by train
NJP is well connected from Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati and other major cities, with several direct overnight options given how popular Darjeeling and the wider Northeast hill circuit are. Use our trip planner to check trains into NJP from your city, and confirm live running status before you leave for the station, since a delay changes how much daylight you'll have for the road climb up to Darjeeling.

Frequently asked questions
How far are the main attractions from Darjeeling railway station?
Once in Darjeeling town, most sights (Chowrasta, Batasia Loop, the zoo and mountaineering institute, Happy Valley Tea Estate) are within about 5 km. Tiger Hill is further out, about 11 km, and needs an early-morning trip.
What is the best time of year to visit Darjeeling?
October to December for the clearest mountain views, and March to May for good visibility plus blooming rhododendrons. The monsoon months from June to September are the least reliable for views and carry landslide risk on the hill roads.
Can Darjeeling's highlights be covered in a single day from the station?
Not really, given the roughly three-hour road climb from New Jalpaiguri just to reach town. Once there, Chowrasta and the nearby sights fit into a day, but adding Tiger Hill's early sunrise trip or a tea estate comfortably needs at least one more day.
Is prepaid auto or taxi available right outside Darjeeling station?
In town, taxis and shared jeeps are easy to arrange for local trips like Tiger Hill or the tea gardens. From New Jalpaiguri, shared jeeps and taxis for the climb up to Darjeeling operate just outside the station.
Which trains connect most easily to Darjeeling?
New Jalpaiguri is the railhead, with direct trains from Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati and other major cities. From NJP, the final leg to Darjeeling is by road or the much slower toy train.
