Shimla's own railway station sits right below the Ridge, which makes it one of the more convenient hill-station arrivals in India, if you get there on the narrow-gauge line. Most journeys to Shimla actually happen in two stages: a broad-gauge train from the plains to Kalka (KLK), then the UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla toy train up into the hills to Shimla station (SML) itself.

Tip: the toy train is the attraction, not just transport, 102 tunnels and more than 800 bridges on a single narrow-gauge line opened in 1903. Book the Shivalik Deluxe or a window seat on the Himalyan Queen well ahead in peak season, seats are limited and sell out.

How far are the sights from Shimla station

Shimla station sits below the Ridge and Mall Road, the town's pedestrian spine, and it's a walkable but steep climb up, figure fifteen to twenty minutes on foot, or a short taxi ride if you're carrying luggage. Once you're up on the Ridge, the core sights, Christ Church, the Gaiety Theatre and Mall Road itself, are all within a compact walking area and largely vehicle-free, which is part of why Shimla still feels manageable despite the crowds in peak season.

A single day from the station

Climb up to the Ridge first thing, before the Mall Road crowds build. Christ Church, one of the oldest churches in North India, anchors one end of the Ridge and is worth a look inside as well as out. Walk the length of Mall Road toward Scandal Point, then continue up to Jakhoo Temple, dedicated to Hanuman and marked by a large statue visible from much of the town, a steep but short climb (or a cable car ride) rewarded with the best panoramic view over Shimla and the surrounding hills.

Beyond a single day

Kufri, about 16 km from Shimla by road, is the standard half-day trip for snow activities in winter and horse rides and valley views the rest of the year. The Viceregal Lodge, a Raj-era building set in its own gardens on the western edge of town, is a quieter and less crowded stop than the Ridge if you want an hour away from the main tourist strip. Anyone extending the toy train theme further can ride sections of the line on and off between Kalka and Shimla, stopping at smaller stations like Barog for their own short walks.

Best time of year

March to June is the most popular season, comfortably cool while the plains below are heating up. December to February brings snow to Shimla itself, appealing if that's what you're after, but the toy train can run to a slower schedule in bad weather, so check live status before you travel. The monsoon, July to September, brings landslide risk on the hill roads and is best avoided for this trip.

Peak season crowds: Shimla gets very busy during the May-June school holiday period and around Christmas and New Year. Both hotel rates and toy train seats are tightest in these windows, book well ahead if you're travelling then.

Getting around once you're there

The Mall Road and Ridge area is pedestrian-only, which is part of the town's appeal, so plan on walking once you're up there. Taxis and a small local bus network cover the parts of Shimla further from the centre, and for Kufri or other out-of-town trips, a shared or private taxi from near the bus stand is the standard way to go. Prepaid taxi counters operate at both Kalka and Shimla stations, and it is worth using them over an unmetered roadside taxi for the climb up to the Ridge.

Where to stay

Staying within walking distance of the Ridge means no reliance on taxis for evening walks along Mall Road, and most of Shimla's better mid-range and heritage hotels sit in this belt. Staying further out, toward Chotta Shimla or the Sanjauli side, is quieter and often cheaper, at the cost of a short taxi ride into the centre each time. Either way, book ahead in peak season, room rates roughly double around major holidays.

Why the toy train matters

The Kalka-Shimla line opened in 1903 to connect the summer capital of British India to the plains, and its 102 tunnels and more than 800 bridges earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008 alongside the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. It's genuinely worth the five hours over a faster road transfer if you have the time, the descent through pine forest and terraced hillsides, with the train slowing for tight curves, is a large part of what makes a Shimla trip memorable rather than just another hill-station visit.

Food to try

Himachali cuisine leans on simple, hearty dishes suited to the cold: try siddu, a steamed stuffed bread, and dham, a traditional festive thali served on special occasions but available in a simplified form at some local restaurants year-round. Mall Road has a good spread of casual cafes for anyone wanting something more familiar between sightseeing stops.
