Trains from most of India arrive on the west bank of the Hooghly river, at Howrah Junction (HWH), while the city centre most visitors are picturing, Park Street, the Maidan, Victoria Memorial, is across the river on the Kolkata side. The walk out of the station and onto the Howrah Bridge itself is worth doing slowly at least once; it's one of the busiest bridges in the world and a proper introduction to the city.

Mallick Ghat's flower market, on the Kolkata bank at the far end of the bridge, runs from before dawn and is one of the more atmospheric ways to start a Kolkata morning, with the bridge looming overhead. It thins out by mid-morning, so an early visit before heading into the rest of the day works best.

Tip: the Kolkata Metro's Howrah station connects directly to the mainline station and is often faster than a taxi across the bridge during the day's traffic, especially if your next stop is central Kolkata around Esplanade or Park Street.

Belur Math and Dakshineswar together

Belur Math, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission on the river's west bank, is a calm, spacious campus and one of the easiest half-day stops from Howrah given how close it is. Dakshineswar Temple, on the opposite (east) bank a little further north, is linked to Belur Math by a passenger ferry across the river when running, which is a pleasant way to combine both without doubling back by road. Check the ferry timing locally, since it depends on river conditions and isn't guaranteed to run all day.

Central Kolkata: Victoria Memorial and the Maidan

Once across the bridge, Victoria Memorial, the vast marble monument set in landscaped gardens, and the open Maidan around it are the classic central-Kolkata stop, about 7-9 km from Howrah depending on the exact route taken. The area also holds St Paul's Cathedral and, a bit further, Park Street's restaurants and old-Kolkata architecture, so it's easy to spend a full afternoon and evening in this one part of town.

Traffic across the bridge can be heavy for hours at a stretch, especially in the evening. If you have a train to catch from Howrah later that day, build in extra time for the crossing rather than cutting it fine, or use the Metro instead of a road taxi.

College Street and the old city, if you have more time

College Street, Kolkata's historic book market lined with stalls and old coffee houses, sits a bit north of the central Victoria Memorial area and rewards an unhurried browse rather than a quick stop. It pairs well with a walk through the older lanes of North Kolkata if your schedule allows a second day in the city rather than a single transit stop.

When to go

October to February brings the most comfortable weather for walking around the city, with Durga Puja in autumn turning Kolkata into one of its most spectacular but also most crowded versions of itself. Summer, roughly April to June, is hot and humid, and the monsoon months can bring sudden, heavy downpours that flood low-lying streets, so plan indoor backups if you're travelling then. If your trip lands during Durga Puja, expect heavy traffic across the bridge for days at a stretch, and book hotels well ahead since the whole city fills up fast around the festival.

Where to eat near the station

Howrah itself is not really a dining destination, most visitors move into the city for food, but there are decent quick options right around the station for a wait between trains, from standard railway-style canteens to a few sit-down Bengali thali places a short walk out. Once across the bridge, the area around Esplanade and Park Street has the wider spread of Kolkata's famous food scene, from Mughlai biryani to old-school Chinese in Tiretti Bazaar, best visited on a morning when the market is still running.

A practical two-stop plan if you only have a few hours

If you're passing through Howrah with a limited window between trains, the most efficient combination is Belur Math, since it's close and calm, followed by one central-Kolkata stop reached via the Metro rather than road traffic. Trying to add Dakshineswar as well in the same short window usually means rushing all three, so it's better to pick two and do them properly than force in a third.

Getting to Howrah by train

Howrah is one of India's busiest and largest termini, with direct trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and virtually every other major city, alongside Sealdah as Kolkata's other big terminus on some routes. Use our trip planner to check direct and connecting options into Howrah, and confirm live running status before heading to the station, since a terminus this large has multiple entry points and it helps to know which one is closer to your platform.
