Diwali 2026 booking clock: dates, Tatkal and fallbacks

A dated booking plan for Diwali 2026 train travel: which early November dates are already open, the Tatkal and chart times that matter, and fallback stations.

Indian Railways train and platform

What is already bookable today

The advance reservation period is 60 days, excluding the journey day. Today, 19 October, that puts the window open for every journey up to 18 December 2026. Diwali week is therefore not a future booking event. The dates opened weeks ago, and the table shows when each one did.

The window is counted from the journey date, so a return on 15 or 16 November also opens in September. Check the exact date on your own ticket plan, because a date after 18 December is not open yet.

For the trains themselves, our Diwali 2026 travel guide lists the regular Delhi to Bihar options, and the Diwali booking calendar covers the same window from another angle. This post is about the timings that come after you have booked.

The timings that matter, in order

Most Diwali travel problems happen at a time you did not plan for. The rules below are the ones to put in your calendar. These are the rules as we understand them at the time of writing, so confirm the details on the official IRCTC site before you act on them.

What a late cancellation costs

If your Diwali plans change, the refund depends on how long before departure you cancel. For confirmed tickets, the rules from April 2026 work like this:

  • More than 72 hours before departure: only a flat fee per passenger is deducted.
  • 72 to 24 hours before departure: 25% is deducted.
  • 24 to 8 hours before departure: 50% is deducted.
  • Less than 8 hours before departure: no refund.

The older 48, 12 and 4 hour bands no longer apply. If you are not sure whether you will travel, cancelling earlier usually keeps more of the fare. For the details on charges, see our guide to train ticket cancellation charges.

Watch out: the refund bands tighten fast. Once you are inside 24 hours of departure, half the fare can go, so decide early if your date may change.

Tatkal is a fallback, not a plan

Tatkal can work for some trains, but it is a short, fixed quota. It opens one day before the journey, at 10:00 for AC classes and 11:00 for non-AC classes, and it needs Aadhaar authentication. On busy Diwali routes the quota can sell out quickly after it opens.

Treat Tatkal as the last option after your reserved booking, and do not plan a family journey around it. Our guide on Tatkal seat confirmation chances explains what does and does not improve your odds on the day.

Booking date calculator

When can you book your ticket?

Uses the 60-day advance booking window (journey day not counted) and the Tatkal opening times (10:00 AC, 11:00 non-AC, one day before). On the day booking opens, only Aadhaar-verified IRCTC users can book online between 08:00 and midnight. Check IRCTC if a rule changes.

    Fallback stations to check first

Alternate boarding stations are often the quickest way to a confirmed seat in a festival week. Compare the stations near your home on the same date, and check the bigger junction in your city as well. Our guide to alternate boarding stations explains the rules, and the city station guides cover the choices in the big cities. In Mumbai, the same check applies to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, which is worth comparing with the other city stations on your date. In Delhi, for example, the options are New Delhi and Anand Vihar Terminal, which serve different trains. Our note on New Delhi, Old Delhi and Nizamuddin shows how they differ.

Check the fallback before you need it. A station that has a direct train on your date is worth more than a station that has a train on a different day.

Specials: a bonus, not the base plan

Festival specials are useful, but they are announced at different times and they may run only on certain days. Special trains often get temporary numbers, so search by station pair and date rather than by a train number you remember. Our notes on festival special trains and duplicate specials explain what to look for.

Book your regular trains first, and add a special only after you have checked its run days and full route on its train page.

    A week-by-week checklist

    1. This week: link Aadhaar, check that every passenger's name and age match their ID, and book outbound and return on the dates you can keep.
    2. Before the travel week: note the Tatkal times for your journey date and the time of the first chart for each train.
    3. Two days before: check the chart status on the train page, and move to your fallback station if your ticket is still waitlisted.
    4. On the day: keep 139 saved for help on the train. For ticket questions, IRCTC customer care is 14646.

Festival rush is not the same for every route, so check the seat position on the trip planner for your own dates rather than relying on general advice.

    Frequently asked questions

Which Diwali dates can I book right now?

Every journey from early November through to 18 December 2026 is inside the 60-day window today. Dates from 3 to 10 November opened in early September, so they are already open for booking.

Is Tatkal a safe backup for Diwali travel?

It can work on some trains, but it opens only one day before the journey, at 10:00 for AC classes and 11:00 for non-AC classes, and it needs Aadhaar authentication. On busy festival routes the quota can sell out quickly, so treat it as a last option.

How late can I cancel and still get a refund?

For confirmed tickets, the rules from April 2026 are: more than 72 hours before departure a flat fee per passenger is deducted, 72 to 24 hours before 25% is deducted, 24 to 8 hours before 50% is deducted, and under 8 hours there is no refund. Check the official IRCTC rules before you cancel.

Should I book a festival special for Diwali?

Only after you have checked its run days and full route on its train page. Specials are announced at different times, so treat one as an extra option alongside your regular booking rather than the main plan.
