Indian Railways train and platform

What we measured and how

This ranking uses only TrainLiveStatus's own delay tracking for the seven days from 19 to 25 October 2026. For each train we record the largest delay reported during that day's run. A train counts as on time on a day when that largest delay is within 15 minutes.

This is our own tracking, not an official Indian Railways statistic. Of 2,150 long-distance trains in scope, 966 were ranked. Across those 966 trains the average largest daily delay was 102 minutes, and 14% of observed runs were on time. The window ends on the publishing day, so 25 October may be only partly recorded.

The 15 most punctual long-distance trains

Trains are ranked by their average largest daily delay, lowest first. Seven of the 15 were on time on every day we observed them. Every train in the table averaged 12 minutes or less of largest delay. Short samples can flatter a train, so check the days observed column as well as the rank.

Live running status

Where is your train right now?

Live position, expected arrival at every stop and the delay history of the last few weeks.

What the top of the list shows

Only one train in the table was observed on all seven days. NDLS Tejas Rajdhani (12951) runs from Mumbai Central to New Delhi, and it was on time every day with an average largest delay of 11 minutes. Its worst day was 13 minutes.

The rest were observed on three to six days. The table ranks trains on those few days, so treat a high rank as a sign of good running, not a promise for your date.

DEE Garibrath (12216) shows why the on-time column matters. It was on time on only two of its five observed days, yet its average is 12 minutes. Its worst day was 17 minutes, so its late days were only just over the 15-minute line.

What the numbers do not show

A ranking of one week says nothing about why a train was on time, and it is not a forecast for the coming week. It does not show how a train's delay changed along its route.

Note: the figures come from running status reports that we collect. They can differ from NTES or a railway zone's figures for the same train on the same day.

How to use this before you travel

  • Check the running days first. Several trains on this list run only on some days of the week, so confirm that your date is a running day.
  • Plan a connection around the worst day, not the average. Even the best trains here had a day with a larger delay, and the worst day column shows it. For a tight connection, use that figure.
  • Look at the live status on the day. Each train page shows the current running status and its recent delay history.
  • Compare alternatives. The trip planner shows other trains between the same stations.

For earlier weeks, see the most punctual trains from 12 to 18 October 2026 and 3 to 9 October. For the delayed side, see the most delayed trains from 12 to 18 October.

Frequently asked questions

How is the punctuality ranking worked out?

For each train we record the largest delay reported during each day's run, then rank trains by the average of those daily figures. A day counts as on time when its largest delay is within 15 minutes. A train with only three observed days can move a lot, so check the days observed column.

Is this an official Indian Railways ranking?

No. It comes from TrainLiveStatus's own delay tracking, built from running status reports. Railway zones publish their own figures, which can differ from ours.

Why do the observed days not match a train's running days?

Our observed days come from the reports we collected in this window, so they do not always match the timetable. Check the running days on the train page before you travel.

Can I rely on this ranking for a tight connection?

Use it as a guide, not a guarantee. The worst day for the 15 trains in the table ranged from 8 to 25 minutes, so a connection with little slack still carries risk. Check the live status on the day and allow extra time where you can.
