What we measured and how
This report covers five regular trains on the Mumbai CSMT to Howrah Junction corridor, as recorded in our own delay tracking for the seven days from 7 to 13 October 2026. For each train we record the largest delay reported during that day's run. A train counts as on time when that largest delay is within 15 minutes.
These figures come from TrainLiveStatus's own tracking. They are not an official Indian Railways statistic. The window includes today, so the last day may be only partly recorded. Our data does not record why a train was late, so this report does not give causes.
The five trains, ranked
All five trains run from C Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Howrah Junction. They are ranked below by their average largest daily delay, longest first.
| # | Train | Departs CSMT | Days seen | Average largest delay | Worst day | On time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 12261 Howrah Duronto | 17:15 | 6 | 7 h 45 min | 11 h 55 min | 0 of 6 |
| 2 | 12809 Howrah Mail | 21:10 | 7 | 3 h 59 min | 5 h 48 min | 0 of 7 |
| 3 | 12859 Gitanjali Express | 06:00 | 7 | 3 h 14 min | 4 h 34 min | 0 of 7 |
| 4 | 12869 CSMT Howrah Express | 11:05 | 3 | 2 h 08 min | 3 h 13 min | 1 of 3 |
| 5 | 12322 Kolkata Mail | 22:15 | 7 | 1 h 22 min | 2 h 31 min | 0 of 7 |
What the numbers show
The Howrah Duronto (12261) has the highest average, 7 h 45 min across six recorded days, and its worst day reached 11 h 55 min. It was not within 15 minutes of schedule on any of those six days.
The Howrah Mail (12809) and the Gitanjali Express (12859) were both recorded on all seven days. Their averages are just under four hours and just over three hours. Neither was on time on any day in the window.

The Kolkata Mail (12322) has the lowest average of the five, at 1 h 22 min. It is also the longest journey in the group. It covers 2,154 km in our route data, against about 1,970 km for the other four, and takes 36 h 55 min. A lower average does not mean a short wait: its worst day was 2 h 31 min late.
Taken together, the simple average of the five trains' averages is 3 h 42 min. Across the 30 train-days we recorded for these five trains, only one was on time, the CSMT Howrah Express on one of its three days.
Read the averages as a snapshot. One bad day moves an average a lot, and a seven-day window is short. Check the reasons different apps show different delays before you compare our figures with another source.
Check the sample before you trust a row
For most trains, days seen matches the running pattern in our timetable. The Howrah Mail, Gitanjali Express and Kolkata Mail run daily, and each has seven days. Two rows do not match the timetable.

The timetable lists the Howrah Duronto on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, yet we recorded six days in this window. The CSMT Howrah Express is listed on Sundays only, yet we recorded three days. We have not yet reconciled these differences, so treat the Duronto and CSMT Howrah Express rows as provisional until we have.
What to do if you travel this route
- Check live status on the day. Each train's page shows its running status and recent delay history. Open it before you leave for the station.
- Set an arrival alert. Turn on alerts on the train page so you hear when the train is close, rather than refreshing the page all evening.
- Do not plan a tight connection around the average. The worst days in this table ranged from 2 h 31 min to 11 h 55 min late. Leave slack for a connection in Howrah or a meeting at the other end.
- Compare alternatives. The trip planner lists other trains between CSMT and Howrah, with seat availability, and shows alternative boarding stations.
- Plan for a long night. Every train here takes between 27 and 37 hours from CSMT to Howrah, so bring food, water and a charged phone.

Frequently asked questions
How is each train ranked in this report?
For each train we record the largest delay reported during each day's run, then rank the five trains by the average of those daily figures. A day counts as on time when the largest delay is within 15 minutes.
Is this an official Indian Railways figure?
No. It comes from TrainLiveStatus's own delay tracking, built from running status reports. Official punctuality figures, where published, use their own methods and can differ from ours.
Why do two trains have fewer or different days in the sample?
The Howrah Duronto and the CSMT Howrah Express do not match their timetable running days in our data. We have not reconciled this yet, so read their rows as provisional.
Should I plan my trip around the average delay?
No. An average is a typical figure over a short window, and the worst days in our data were much later than the average. Check the train's live status on the day and leave slack for any connection.
